About this deal

Konjac is also sometimes known as the “elephant yam”. It belongs to a group of 170 closely-related plants, though Konjac is currently thought to be the only member from which glucomannan is harvested. Native to Southeast Asia, it has a long history of culinary use and is a key ingredient in Japanese shirataki noodles. In this article, we want to talk about glucomannan and weight loss. Glucomannan is a dietary fibre promoted as a health supplement to support weight loss, lower cholesterol, and treat constipation. You can find out more about the benefits of glucomannan here. In adults, there is evidence that glucomannan can help increase bowel movements by 30%. In children, glucomannan has been found to relieve constipation, stomach pain, and bloating. 4. Glucomannan can help regulate blood glucose

However, two other studies ( this one and this one) have found that glucomannan supplementation can improve weight loss. There is also some evidence to suggest that like other soluble sources of fibre it reduces the absorption of proteins and fats, which may further have an impact to overall calorie intake, especially when combined with an energy restricted diet. Glucomannan for Cholesterol

REVIEW article

Konjac, or Amorphophallus konjac, has a few other names including konnyaku (yam cake) and Elephant Yam, although it is not related to true yams. Worse, they were given to very small children. 6 infants reportedly choked on konjac candy, leading to government warnings. This was not due to the ingredients in the candy (which was rumored at the time) but to the small size of the pieces. Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem in western nations, yet is a preventable disease in most cases. It is believed by experts that problems arise in response to sudden spikes in glucose, typically from the consumption of sugary foods and drinks. When these spikes of blood glucose occur repeatedly, the body can start to become resistant to the effects of insulin. It is thought that this effect on cholesterol levels comes in response to two different factors. Firstly, glucomannan’s viscous nature slows down the rate at which nutrients are absorbed from the gut. This, in turn, seems to impact the rate at which cholesterol is absorbed from food.

Glucomannan can help you feel full: Foods rich in fibre are known to increase feelings of fullness and satiety and to act as an appetite suppressant. As a potent fibre, glucomannan is known to do precisely this. However, it’s not clear whether glucomannan helps reduce appetite more than any other fibre.Studies proved that bile acid is in close relationship with the carcinogenesis process ( Mizutani and Mitsuoka, 1982). It could promote gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation ( Jia et al., 2018) and change the composition of normal gut microbiota, by means of which bile acid becomes a risk factor during tumor formation ( Jia et al., 2018). Administration of Konjac glucomannan was found to increase the fecal output of total bile acids in rats ( Ikegami et al., 1984; Wu and Chen, 2011b). What’s more, Konjac glucomannan significantly decreases secondary bile acid level in human subjects ( Wu et al., 2011a). Therefore, the reduction of bile acids would be another functional aspect of glucomannan supplementation.

Like other fibres, glucomannan may help bodyweight management in several ways. Let’s take them one by one. I study diet and nutrition yet my brain turns off when confronted by infomercials and the like, and I admit to having missed some trends over the years. One study is Asian, but like much of the other research focuses on the use of glucomannan in animal feed. So, does glucomannan work for weight loss? The evidence so far shows the results are mixed, but there is good reason to be hopeful. As a prebiotic fibre, glucomannan may offer benefits for gut health – including promoting good gut bacteria. But there is not yet enough evidence to say for sure. Does Glucomannan Cause Constipation? Our glucomannan fibre capsules are manufactured in the UK to the high standards set by the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Glucomannan also swells in the stomach when it reacts with liquids. This can cause a feeling of satiety.

Several clinical trials showed that glucomannan could aid with weight-loss and the treatment of obesity when taken on a daily basis. Another study gave obese adults a glucomannan supplement before breakfast, lunch, and dinner for eight weeks. The study found no benefit for weight loss compared to a group who took a placebo. In one final study a group of overweight individuals were split into two groups. The first of these was provided with a glucomannan supplement. This was taken with 50ml of water 5-10 minutes before each meal for a period of 14 weeks. The second control group continued on as normal. Thereafter measurements were taken. The group supplementing with glucomannan fibre experienced an average weight loss of almost 6kg during that period and a reduction in waist size of 12cm, while body fat levels fell by an average of 2.43%. Dietary fibre is known to be beneficial for the smooth passing of food through the digestive tract. Here glucomannan once again seems to come into its own. Thanks to the gel-like texture of glucomannan when it absorbs water in the gut, any food present is able to move smoothly and efficiently. To this end it seems that suitable supplementation with glucomannan may help to increase regularity and to improve symptoms of constipation. Glucomannanabsorbs so much liquid that if you empty a capsule into a small glass of water, the entire thing turns into a gel. B ecause of this, it is important to take capsules with a full glass of water to safely and naturally assist weight loss.

Glucomannan Dosage

Harmless and reasonably useless, it made a splash in the early part of the 2000’s without landing its proponent in very much legal trouble, and it remains fairly well known today, partly thanks to a seemingly perpetual ad campaign that never uses the word ‘glucomannan.’ Interestingly, the scientists also observed that the participants saw significant declines in cholesterol levels, hinting at a further benefit of glucomannan supplementation.
