William Henry James Blakemore (1871, in West Midlands Birmingham, England – 1945) was an English engraver, and medallist at the Royal Mint London. During his long career with the Royal Mint William Blakemore was the craftsman for the engraving of master dies for the Royal Mint London, and other Royal Mint branches, like the Royal Canadian Mint. He also engraved the designs for the first Australian coins of 1910.William Henry James Blakemore (1871-1945) was an English engraver and medallist at the Royal Mint London. Grade is a definition used by collectors when describing the condition of a coin. Grades listed on the chart range from Good (heavily worn penny) to Uncirculated (no wear). Specific areas are inspected to judge condition. Compare the reverse detail of the two pennies. An astute eye detects a difference. Both are just slightly worn and condition is Extremely Fine, an elusive grade for a 1928-D penny. Grading is a process used to categorise coins based on the amount of wear they have received since being minted. In the UK, a coin’s grade ranges from Fine to Uncirculated, with each grade being split into divisions. Two obverse varieties exist for the 1921 dated issues. We are indebted to Declan Magee and Numista member Sjoelund for the image below indicating the differences. The reverse design of the 1921 penny, shown below, features Britannia holding a trident in her left hand and resting her right hand on a shield bearing the combined crosses of the Union Flag. The 1928-D penny, from the Denver mint, is much scarcer than its Philadelphia-minted sibling. It is relatively scarce, as well.
