About this deal

The build quality is amazing. This Solo 421 9kg Manual Spreader is a professional-grade piece of equipment. The alturnative spreaders for the home gardener don’t even come close to this spreader in terms of build quality. This is clearly designed to last a lifetime, but if I had to replace it, I would get one again. Walk up and down the lawn, The Miracle-Gro® Drop Spreader creates a strip of granules directly below the moving spreader which is approximately 45cm (18in) wide. When returning, align the arrow on the hopper above the tyre marks made in the previous strip. This product isn’t perfect, and there are a couple of little niggles such as it being hard to get the last bit of feeder to fall through the hole due to the shape of the feeder, not being able to use it for spreading road salt, and the fact that it takes a while to get the settings and walking speed right. The EverGreen Easy Spreader Plus does a good job of living up to that ‘easy spreader’ name – it’s an uncomplicated drop spreader with a basic design that works well. It’s a simple but effective way to spread seed and fertiliser in small gardens. However, what this ultimately means is that there are plenty of settings to choose from – you just need to get the hang of them, There are various apertures as well as a wide spreading width that’s adjustable between 1.2 m and 3.4 m.

Make sure that the materials are corrosion resistant. You can help to further prevent rust/corrosion by limiting the spreaders exposure to the elements. Keep the lawn spreader dry and out of direct sunlight as much as possible to prolong the life of the metal and plastic components. There are some of us who would prefer to use a rotary spreader but only have a small garden and are worried about getting unwanted chemicals in places we don’t want them. Even when walking at the slowest pace, the larger broadcast spreaders still distribute the contents of the hopper and some distance and it can be hard to control where it goes in a small or narrow yard. There are also directions given for using the best spread rate settings with various types of EverGreen granular products too. If using a rotary/broadcast spreader, you may find that you use less seeds/fertiliser because it casts them further but less densely. You can still achieve a denser application with a rotary spreader, but you’ll need to complete more passes of the lawn which will take more time.To add to that, this model is easy to assemble. In a couple of minutes of reading the instructions, you’re done and it’s ready for use. The 16kg lawn spreader comes with a three-year warranty which indicates that the quality of the model can be trusted. It is a premium-priced product designed with professional use in mind. Pros

The largely steel construction has been powder coated to fight off adverse weather effects, and has been done to a high quality and should last. The frame itself feels very strong too, so you can forgive the extra weight that comes with it, and with those pneumatic wheels doing their job, you don’t notice it that much anyway. If you’re working on a large scale, you’ll be able to fit roughly a 20 kg bag of fertiliser or lawn seed into the hopper at a time.

Please see our Buyer’s Guide for a description of the pros and cons of broadcast spreaders, drop spreaders and handheld spreaders. If using a drop spreader, the application will be more concentrated and therefore you may use more product. You need to be especially careful not to stop still when using a drop spreader – if the aperture is open, the seeds/fertiliser will be heaped in one place. Arriving almost fully assembled, you can have this lawn feed spreader out of the box and on your lawn in a matter of minutes.

Please be aware that the battery and charger don’t come with the feeder as standard, and you will have to pay extra for them, quite a bit extra actually, and that is the biggest flaw of the Einhell Power X-change feeder. It’s an excellent product and gives you a really even and uniform spread. It is also very easy to use and requires no physical shaking or turning of handles either. However, it is quite expensive when you compare it to other handheld lawn feed spreaders, and I think that unless you have money to burn, or you plan on using more tools from the same range, the price might put you off. So, what are the negatives? Well, I can only really find one, but it might be enough to put some people off.Even with the cover in place, it’s still possible to keep an eye on how much product is left, because the transparent material provides a window into the hopper – so, overall, there’s a definite sensation that the designers of this large lawn spreader had first-hand experience using these kinds of tools. I have to be honest and say that I wish that Evergreen had used metal for the spread controls instead of plastic, but as long as you’re not super heavy-handed, the plastic is decent enough quality not to break easily. The adjustment is very simple, the higher the number, the wider the holes in the bottom of the hopper – when set to 9 you can see cear daylight through and will be releasing a lot of seed or feed: Solo 421 9kg Manual Spreader– A unique hand spreader that you wear. I use this for applying fertiliser on uneven ground.
