Overall, this a lovely story, a wondrous journey, and reawakening for Rose, with a hint of a more contented and fulfilled future. One Perfect Rose’ by Dorothy Parker is an endearing and somewhat depressing poem that alludes to the tired cliches of love and a speaker’s desire for more. He finds himself in a cleanly compartmentalized area featuring another Pearl who organizes all of Pearl's possessions. Steven asks about the whereabouts of the phone; after a search by Pearl fails to find it, she guesses that it may be with the "other Pearls", but advises him not to go to where they are because "it's a mess". Nevertheless, Steven insists, and Pearl takes him inside her gemstone yet again. The cycle continues several times as Steven is taken further into Pearl's gemstone, passing through her memories including Rose's pregnancy and the aftermath of the Gem War. Eventually, he reaches the moment where Rose Quartz has just shattered Pink Diamond. He steps closer, and she raises her head and opens her eyes, which resemble Pearl's.

Many readers, I imagine, will be familiar with The Elegance of the Hedgehog. A Single Rose is the latest work brought to an English audience by Gallic Books. Under their talks….some humor and sarcasm….they are covertly opening up more serious life conversations > gently, subtly, and purely.the dialogue between Paul and Rose is priceless- witty- funny- thought provoking- tender and moving. This sounds lovely and I know I will love it. I haven’t read The Elegance of the Hedgehog yet, but hope to one day get to it. Nowadays there is quite a large selection of single-flowered roses to choose from and they can be found across all sections of the genus Rosa. Indeed, some of the cultivars included here might be classified as semi- double by aficionados. Paul calls Rose a “pain-in-the-ass.” She agrees. Every day, Paul takes Rose to another temple that meant something to Haru. He also takes her to tea houses, bars and restaurants. Barbery lyrically describes the trees and flowers, the food and drink, even the weather. Japan is so entirely different from France that these observations sometimes have a sense of wonder, sometimes of frustration. There is additional frustration for Rose in that she has never understood why her father never got in touch with her and her mother never told her.

Upon arrival in Kyoto, her interior landscape begins to change as fast as her exterior one. We see these layers build up one by one, like at dinner one night, when Rose watches the chef place speared fish on skewers onto the grill. “He was sweating profusely, wiping his face with a white towel, but Rose did not feel disgusted the way she would have in Paris.” At the age of forty, Rose receives word of the death of her father. A father she has no memory of ever meeting, a man she has spent most of her life both yearning for a connection with, and resenting his absence. Now she must travel to Kyoto, where he lived, for the reading of the will. She arrives there, not knowing the language, and is met by her father’s assistant, Paul.

This lushly written novella length story profiles the reexamination of Rose’s distant and estranged relationship with her father, who has recently passed away. Rose travels to Japan, planning to stay only long enough to discover the contents of her father’s will. predicted. Readers might feel some predictability coming down the pipes (in fact I’m sure of it), but holy moly ….most readers won’t mind one bit……and can easily be read in one or two sittings. Pearl's aversion to shapeshifting is revealed to stem from her role as Rose Quartz in the staged shattering of Pink Diamond and the trauma from the loss of nearly all of her comrades in the ensuing retaliation. To say you're sorry: If you've had a tiff with a loved one, whether it's a parent, loved one, or a friend, a single rose can go a long way to heal the wound left from an argument or disagreement.
