That’s why I’ve run the length of the UK in my bare feet – to show girls and young women that taking risks and doing things that scare them, big or small, can be incredible. I have enjoyed all of Anna's books but this one holds a special place for me as I was one of those 2500 runners who joined her for a stage on her journey running barefoot Britain.

Anna McNuff has run more than 2,000 miles across Britain – in Anna McNuff has run more than 2,000 miles across Britain – in

McNuff has completed a multitude of challenges, the smaller of which include running the length of Hadrian's Wall (86 miles) dressed as a Roman soldier, running the length of the Jurassic Coast (96 miles) dressed as a Dinosaur and rollerblading 100 miles around Amsterdam. When running with Anna, she was so welcoming and positive that I would never have realised how low she had felt. That makes me think about how often we all cover those emotions to the outside world and that we often have no idea what is going on in someone else's orbit.

BAREFOOT BRITAIN - Anna McNuff

Anna McNuff had never run a mile without shoes on before. And yet, one British summer, she set off to run a (very) wiggly route from the Shetland Islands to London - on a mission to cover the distance of 100 marathons... in bare feet. Overall though, she seems to be coping remarkably well. Anna’s feet have been through the good and bad so far on Barefoot Britain. Photo: Anna McNuff Furthermore, McNuff, an ambassador for UK Girl Guiding, plotted her route to reach as many Guide (girl guides) units as possible, arriving in the evenings to give motivational talks and show them her disgusting feet. ‘I wanted to bring it to life for them, show them that I’m a real human being and I’m really doing it, and it’s hard and it’s awesome and all those things,’ she says.Anna was never anything like those “real” runners on telly – all spindly limbs, tiny shorts, and split times – but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometre-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder…perhaps being a “real” runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway? Anna McNuff set out from the Shetland Isles in June 2019 and, after 2,620 miles - the equivalent of 100 marathons - reached the finishing line on Sunday, November 17.

Starting in the Shetland Islands and ending five months later in London, I weaved my way along rugged coastlines, through small villages, across moors, along beaches, over farmland and even pitter-pattered down the odd picturesque A-road too. If you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one in your group of friends who is not buying a house, married or pregnant, then this book’s for you.Barefoot Britain” by Anna McNuff is one of the best outdoor adventure books as it takes readers on a journey of pushing mind and body to the limit by running 100 marathons barefoot from the Shetland Islands to London. From the Shetland Isles, Anna’s run - which took five months - took her down the northeast coast of Scotland towards Inverness, before heading down to Glasgow and Edinburgh via Aberdeen. Funny, honest, inspiring. Anna is wonderfully bonkers, writes brilliantly and cares deeply about the guiding movement. Running well over 2000 miles barefoot in Britain she has adventures, hardships and meets some fascinating people. From climbing mountains and cycling across continents to running marathons barefoot, these books inspire you to push yourself to the limit and experience life to the fullest. The second, Thunder and Sunshine, covers the rest of the trip and is just as enjoyable (if not more so) than the first.

Anna McNuff Home - Anna McNuff

Anna McNuff (born 18 October 1984) is a British endurance athlete, adventurer, author and motivational speaker for her long, human powered adventures – most notably running the distance of 90 marathons through Great Britain in her bare feet.

A down to earth account of the highs and lows of facing and achieving an incredible challenge. Anna shows the impossible is possible, never stop your dreams. Less of an outdoor adventure book but an adventure nonetheless, The Great Railway Bazaar is one of those class adventure books. Make sure to add this famous adventure book to your list of books to read while social distancing. I love these books because they get the heart of the adventure, they tell you the things you want to know, what adventurers eat, the days when you can’t be arsed but plough on regardless but most of all they remind you there are more people out there like us, people who want you to achieve and will cheer you on and welcome you in. We need more of that. The book combines insights from both Scott and his wife, Jenny, as they partner together on this challenge. What I’ve learned from all these years doing bonkers adventures around the world,” she says. “Is that if you take on things you think are just beyond what you can actually do, and then somehow make it through, you get this confidence you would never have had otherwise.
