Achievement in Special Effects: 1988". British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Archived from the original on May 31, 2012 . Retrieved June 13, 2010. Tim Burton's Beetlejuice is about an ordinary couple who just happen to be ghosts. When the couple discover that a family has moved into their precious house, they attempt to scare them away—and when that doesn’t work, they turn to the obnoxious and scheming ghost Betelgeuse (pronounced, of course, as "Beetlejuice") for help. Chaos ensues! Below are 38 unusual facts about one of Burton's masterpieces. There are about 37 minutes of bonus features included in this release, none of which are on the 4K Disc, but rather placed on the Blu-ray release. There are no new extras, but instead, some of the previous special features are imported from the 2008 release. That's unfortunate because this film needs an overhaul of relevant bouns features.

McPhee, Ryan (September 13, 2018). " Beetlejuice Musical Sets Spring 2019 Broadway Opening Date". Playbill . Retrieved September 6, 2018. In 2016, a musical adaptation of the 1988 film Beetlejuice (directed by Tim Burton and starring Geena Davis as Barbara Maitland, Alec Baldwin as Adam Maitland, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice) was reported to be in the works, directed by Alex Timbers and produced by Warner Bros., following a reading with Christopher Fitzgerald in the title role. In March 2017, it was reported that Australian musical comedian Eddie Perfect would be writing the music and lyrics and Scott Brown and Anthony King would be writing the book of the musical, and that another reading would take place in May, featuring Kris Kukul as musical director. [4] The musical had three readings and two workshops with Alex Brightman in the title role, Sophia Anne Caruso as Lydia Deetz, and Kerry Butler and Rob McClure as Barbara and Adam Maitland. At a dinner party Delia throws to show her sculptures and other art pieces, the entire group ends up singing 'The Banana Boat Song,' and the shrimp dish in front of them turns into grasping hands. The Maitlands think they've finally succeeded, only to find that their antics have actually amused the Deetzes. The Deetzes send Lydia to bring them down, and when they refuse, everyone clambers to the attic, demanding that the Maitlands show themselves. They find no one there, but Charles is entranced by the miniature of the town, and Otho finds and takes the handbook.

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear the film's composer, Danny Elfman, singing a ghoulish version “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” in the opening credits sequence when the Geffen logo appears.

In Burton's darkly funny movie, the Maitlands' death is caused by swerving their car to avoid a dog on a covered bridge and drowning, while in the musical they fall through the floorboards of the house. Beetlejuice has had fans clamoring for a sequel for decades, and I'm not going to be the one to shut those hopes down. With the talented cast, especially where they all are in their careers now, a sequel could be interesting. But I never found Geena Davis or Alec Baldwin's characters to be all that interesting. As they weave their way through the weirdness of the world of death, the film just veers more into a meandering area. Keaton’s first appearance in Beetlejuice doesn't come until 25 minutes into the film, and he only has a total of 17.5 minutes of screen time in the entire 92-minute movie. In the waiting room at the end of the film, the bottom half of the magician's assistant that Beetlejuice tries to feel up was played by Tim Burton's then-girlfriend.

The film begins with a young couple, Barbara and Adam Maitland, who both live a quiet life in a small country town in Connecticut. During an early morning errand, a freak car accident occurs where the happy couple ends up dead. They soon realize this unfortunate news and have to start learning how to cope with living as ghosts for the next 125 years as a posh New York family moves into their home and starts to redecorate and throw all of their belongings out. This new family includes a young daughter (Winona Ryder), who is strange and unusual, who can actually see the deceased couple and converse with them. The film has Betelgeuse ask for Lydia to marry him in the climax in exchange for his help, but they don't meet until near the end. The musical has Beetlejuice and Lydia meet much earlier on in Act One, when Lydia reveals herself to be the only human who can see him. She summons Beetlejuice, allowing people to see him in the Act One finale. The beginning of Act two features the two living together happily without Charles or Delia scaring people off. Adam and Barbara are a normal couple...who happen to be dead. They have given their precious time to decorate their house and make it their own, but unfortunately a family is moving in, and not quietly. Adam and Barbara try to scare them out, but end up becoming the main attraction to the money making family. They call upon Beetlejuice to help, but Beetlejuice has more in mind than just helping. — ahmetkozan Millward, Tom. "Everything you need to know about Beetlejuice on Broadway", New York Theatre Guide, October 20, 2022 In the movie, Otho was an interior designer, but in the musical, he is a con man posing as a guru and life coach. Otho in the movie merely had his outfit changed by Betelgeuse, but in the musical, he is implied to have been killed.

Using the handbook and the Maitlands' wedding clothes, Otho performs a seance that forces the couple to appear before them. However, this causes the Maitlands to deteriorate, their forms reverting to their decaying corpses. Burton described the character of Betelgeuse to Keaton as “having lived in every time period but no time period.”
