About this deal

This is the second book in the New Orleans series, with a lot of new characters and a few from the first book, however unlike previous series I did not think this book tied in as seamless as other novels in previous series have. I think this may be the reason I’m a bit disappointed in this book. This is the second book in the New Orleans series and in my opinion, it just gets better and better. That man is Aaron Gates. Who it turns out is connected to a gang Sixth Day. Whom NOPD believe long disbanded but now believe are targeting Kaj's son. Karen Rose was introduced to suspense and horror at the tender age of eight when she accidentally read Poe's The Pit and The Pendulum and was afraid to go to sleep for years. She now enjoys writing books that make other people afraid to go to sleep. Karen Rose has written another top-notch thriller! Grab this book. You won’t be able to put it down.”— New York Times bestselling author, Brenda Novak

Beneath Dark Waters by Karen Rose | Hachette UK

My heart ached for the innocent here because these bad guys were awful! I didn’t want anyone landing in their hands at all! My heart pounded as the events unfolded! Thankfully, Val and Kaj were smart and didn’t take unnecessary risks. Still… In New Orleans, instead of being centered around law enforcement, the stories seem to be characters who work for Broussard's private investigators. Broussard is an ex-cop in New Orleans and has friends on the force who also figure in the events. The two main characters, Val and Kaj, were developed with heart and kindness, plus the growth of steamy heat and simmering love interest tempered the ugliness surrounding them. Beyond Dark Waters is the 2nd novel in the New Orleans series. (Rose even references Scarlett from the Cincinnati series, which, for me, was one of my favorite parts of the book.)And, to hype up the tension, the major villain gets narration time as well. I really wanted some big-time justice there and Karen Rose delivered. I seriously miss the old Karen Rose books. There’s so much more atmosphere, suspense and a lot of mystery. You could feel the tension and the fear!! There’s nothing left to wonder. You’re introduced to the villains immediately (and their decisions are ridiculous) and the romance blossoms in a day. There’s some heat, but normally I can’t wait til the characters get together.

The heart-stopping new thriller in the New Orleans series, from Sunday Times bestselling author Karen Rose. Public prosecutor J.P. “Kaj” Cardozo has only lived in New Orleans for six months, and he’s already working on a high-profile celebrity sexual assault case that’s made headlines all over the country. But when his son becomes the target of a kidnapping attempt as a threat to Kaj, he is desperate to keep him safe and turns to a private investigative firm famous for their protection services. And Val starts to question why her brother was murdered. Only the answer isn't the one she expected. When Val Sorensen of Burke Broussard Private Investigation Agency is assigned as Elijah’s bodyguard, she realises she also has a very personal connection to the gang thought to be behind the attempted kidnap – a run in with Sixth Day cost her brother his life. Assistant District Attorney Kaj Cardozo has only lived in New Orleans for six months, but he is known in both New York and in his new home city for his fight against corruption. He’s also working a high-profile celebrity assault case that is getting publicity across the country. When his son Elijah becomes the target of a kidnapping attempt, Kaj hires Broussard Investigations to protect Elijah. Val Sorensen is the person assigned to be his bodyguard and the firm is hired to investigate the incident. The investigation reveals more than they bargained for, as drugs, corruption, and murder are discovered. Some details were brushed over, such as the mole. This was obviously quite a big part of the story and the events that happened but it didn't have enough explanation or attention for me, which made the impact of what happened quite dull. Like with the first book, despite the length, there was not enough relationship development, or romantic tension to make the relationship between Kaj and Val feel meaningful. I felt disconnected to their romance story because of this.
