Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with Bonjela. Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Lidocaine should be used with caution in patients receiving other local anaesthetics or agents structurally related to amide-type local anaesthetics, e.g. antiarrhythmic drugs such as mexiletine, since the toxic effects may be additive.Adults and children over the age of 16: Using a clean finger massage approximately half an inch of the gel onto the sore area, not more than once every 3hours. Bonjela Junior Gel is specially formulated to relieve pain associated with mouth ulcers, including those caused by braces. It contains Lidocaine Hydrochloride, a local anaesthetic to relieve pain, and Cetylpyridinium Chloride, an antiseptic which helps to fight infections.

Children’s Bonjela doesn’t usually cause any side effects, but as with all medication, there is a small risk. Look out for the following symptoms: This medicine contains 242.2 mg of alcohol (ethanol) per 1g. The amount in each 1g of this medicine is equivalent to less than 7 ml beer or 3 ml of wine. The other ingredients are ethanol, glycerol, levomenthol, hypromellose 4500, star anise oil (d-Limonene, anisyl alcohol, linalool), saccharin sodium, and purified water. Adults aged 16 and over should gently massage approximately 1cm of Bonjela adult gel or Bonjela cool mint gel into the sore area of the mouth using a clean fingertip. Leave at least three hours between applications. This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) in each dose, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'.

Aside from using teething gels, there are various alternative treatments that you can try to relieve teething pain for your child. Everyone is different, so you may need to try several different remedies before you find an effective option. Consider the following for your child: Excessive dosage, short intervals between doses or use on traumatised mucosa may result in high plasma levels and serious adverse effects (see Section 4.9).
