About this deal

Chizmar does nonetheless go to great lengths to convince us of the reality of his imaginings. Included is a forward by the true crime specialist James Renner that compounds the fictional ruse, numerous interview transcriptions and staged photos of the principals of the case (actors, actually). There’s also, however, a lengthy afterward detailing the book’s fictional and non-fictional elements, so nobody can say Chizmar doesn’t play fair. RC: Accept that it’s a long and bumpy road to becoming a successful writer – and there are many different definitions of “successful” in the writing world. Learn to accept the rejection and self-doubt as a sort of badge of honor that all writers must earn along the way. Be stubborn and get the words down on paper (I’m talking about that most difficult of all first draft) and worry about revising and polishing later.

Book Review: Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar Book Review: Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar

Chasing the Boogeyman is genuinely chilling and something brand new and exciting. Compulsive reading and scary…I thought often of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, but never to the story’s detriment. Ray Bradbury’s influence is all over it, but he never could’ve written that ending. Chasing the Boogeyman does what true crime so often cannot: it offers both chills and a satisfying conclusion.”I'm a little late to this party and I am sure you have all heard the buzz about this book. A fictional serial killer story meant to read like true crime, pictures and all, and partly a memoir. Riveting. Chilling. Chasing the Boogeyman is an unflinching look at a real-life monster and the ordinary heroes obsessed with stopping him.” Let’s say you’re a Stephen King Constant Reader, and you’ve gone through his entire catalogue. What to do, what to do??? May I offer Richard Chizmar’s Chasing the Boogeyman for your consideration? If you are a fan of mystery novels, thrillers, suspense, or horror — this book is a must read.” — Grimoire of Horror it’s shaped a bit like I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer, blending the elements of the (let's call it) true crime story with memoir, as the author/character becomes more personally invested in the series of murders plaguing his hometown and more involved in their investigation. but it also borrows from the structural conceit of found footage horror movies, incorporating photographs and interviews with key figures involved in the case, suffusing the story with authenticity.

RC: The first issue was published in December 1988 when I was a senior in college, but I started reading submissions and promoting the magazine earlier that summer. I had no idea at the time if we would survive a year or a decade. It didn’t really matter. I just kept my head down and focused on the work on my desk. The first book we published – three years later – was an extraordinary collection of crime and suspense fiction by Ed Gorman. It was called Prisoners and Other Stories. Chasing the Boogeyman – Richard Chizmar

From the founder and publisher of Cemetery Dance Magazine, a publication specialising in horror and suspense, comes a spine-chilling story about a serial killer terrorising a small town in the state of Maryland. A metafictional retelling of events that took place in 1988, Chasing the Boogeyman is tinged with Stephen King-style horror, and indeed Richard Chizmar has worked closely with King on a number of projects. Every time I took a break from the computer screen and glanced outside, I imagined the ghosts of my childhood friends sprinting shirtless across the lawn, whooping with laughter and disappearing into the wavering shadows, beneath the towering weeping willow whose spindly branches had snagged so many of our taped-up Wiffle balls and provided hours of cooling shade in which to play marbles and eat pizza subs and trade baseball cards. In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman—and he’s playing games with them. For a once peaceful community trapped in the depths of paranoia and suspicion, it feels like a nightmare that will never end. Kit, Borys (January 20, 2023). Although I’ve often thought about that moment over the years, I’ve never spoken or written about it until now.
