About this deal

This authentic story of consuming fury and the power of found family to heal is an excellent choice. . . ." —School Library Journal An] astounding and exhilarating debut. . . . This fast-paced adventure is chaotic in the best way, featuring diverse and relatable characters that readers will fall in love with, despite their flaws, and a heartrending love story that reminds us that humanity seeks comfort even in the most painful of times.” — Booklist, Starred Review I think this story is very unique and love the ideas. The full story didn’t come together perfectly for me. I struggled with the writing at times, the pacing, and I personally didn’t connect to the characters. At its core, Hell Followed with Us is seething with rage. Rage against the systems that oppress the most vulnerable, rage against violent transphobia and rage against fundamentalism of all kinds. It is a burning, screaming testament to the power of anger. Few things excite me more in fiction than characters, particularly teenagers, who get to be unapologetically angry. So many stories require their characters to be nice, soft and agreeable. Hell Follows with Us sets those expectations aflame. Benji is filled with righteous rage and honestly, I don’t think there’s any other way to survive in the world of this book.

what the book does well in my opinion, is the amount of representation is gives. none of it is casual and the rep is very much an integral part of the story and is therefore also very much in your face (as in you get reminded that character x is identity y over and over again) - this isn't necessarily a BAD thing and i would argue can also be a GOOD thing. i didn't mind the constant repetition that much but i understand why one could argue that many characters sole personality trait was being a token representation of a certain identity. to defend my disastrous financial decisions: this book cover slaps and it will still look good on my shelf where i can wistfully look at it and wish i had enjoyed reading it as much as i enjoy staring at it. Gloriously dark and immersive, Hell Followed with Us cuts straight to the core. With its endearing cast, detailed worldbuilding, and breathtaking horror, this novel kept me at the edge of my seat. Hands down the best YA horror book I've read."— Aden Polydoros, author of The City BeautifulThe second thing Dad told me—when we finally escaped, listening for the scream of monsters and the beat of boots against the ground—was that if the Angels want to get their hands on me, I have to make them suffer for it.

some of benji's thoughts are expressed in this especially. Language: English Words: 196 Chapters: 1/1 Comments: 18 Kudos: 32 Bookmarks: 1 Hits: 206WARNING**: This book is NOT for the weak of heart ! Body horror, cult horror, apocalyptic horror, gore horror… first book to ever truly, wholly SCARE ME, TERRIFY THE HELL OUT OF ME (again, pun intended 😉), from beginning to end , & you have no idea how hard that is—I do not scare easily ! Especially when it comes to books, the author has to be a MASTER of horror so AGAIN a shit out to White is TOTALLY INCREDIBLE 🫣! Mad respect to them, truly. This is a MASSIVE feat— MASSIVE!!!. I dreamed about what it would be like on the other side of the bridge. Dad and I could head north and find a place to make it through the summer. Sure, there would be Angels, because there would always be Angels until the last nonbeliever was dead, but we would have all the earth to avoid them. Maybe we would meet someone: a handsome nonbeliever who would fall for me when I soaked his hands in warm water and bandaged his wounds. He would be sweet and a little brash and queer as hell, and he wouldn’t mess up my pronouns when he saw my chest for the first time. Sometimes he was blond, like my fiancé. Most of the time, he wasn’t. I’ll be good. I’ll be good, I’ll be good.” I say it out loud like that will make failure feel any better, as if my insides aren’t screaming to burn the Angels in hellfire, as if there’s any way I could obey all of Dad’s words at once. “I’ll be good, O Lord, lend me Your strength, lead and guide me—”

(Video Game), Hell Followed With Us - Andrew Joseph White This would be a perfect read for the readathon I’m hosting in October (#Rainboween) but I can’t wait any longer. Well, at least I’ll hopefully be able to recommend it to other readers. This authentic story of consuming fury and the power of found family to heal is an excellent choice. . . .” —School Library Journal
