The novel had me audibly gasping at the plot twists. Hoover’s incredibly honest writing style made me fall in love with and feel the heartbreak of the characters all at once. Her delicate exploration of domestic violence widens the scope for greater understanding of ‘why women stay’ Although the books may still occupy notable spaces on bookstore shelves, its hype is superfluous and I believe Lily’s narrative to be worth no more than an easy, airport read.
