Until well on into the 19th Century, it was a rough place, the haunt of smugglers who alternated as fishermen and who had developed their special kippering process, the secret of which is still jealously preserved today. The town's growth as a port and industrial centre has been phenomenal and it rapidly became the Island's commercial capital. However, it still retains many marks of its uncouth origins and is not attractive to tourists. Nevertheless, those ramblers who are bold and dedicated enough to scramble up the steep path beside the Falls of Tid will be rewarded in the valley beyond, which is a place of awesome splendour. Mention of the Falls is a further reminder of Messrs A. W. Dry's enterprise. In 1906, by harnessing the Falls of Tid, Tidmouth became the first town in Sodor to be lit by electricity. Tidmouth received a Royal Charter to become a Borough in 1918. Thomas is a blue tank engine who works at a big station called Knapford on an island called Sodor. His job is to fetch coaches for the other engines and then take them away the engines are done pulling them and when the passengers get out. Thomas thinks he works the hardest and is often very cheeky to the bigger engines, especially a big and proud engine named Gordon who pulls the Express. Thomas likes to startle him rudely by teasing him with his loud whistle. The whistle pattern Thomas makes when he wakes Gordon up for the second time is used in Mister Moose's Fun Time whenever Thomas' segment in that show is coming up next. In the Shining Time Station episode, A Place Unlike Any Other, Ringo Starr's line "and off he ran laughing" was used, much like its UK counterpart, while some US dubs of Ringo Starr's dub have him say, "And off Thomas ran laughing."

In The Railway Series, it acts as a small junction station for Thomas' Branch Line. In both Thomas & Friends and All Engines Go, it is a large station that acts as the west terminus of the Main Line instead of Tidmouth.

Several maps show the main line terminating at the junction, though some books mention that the terminus is Tidmouth. Furthermore, Knapford appears to be larger than Tidmouth, whereas the Rev. W. Awdry stated in The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways that it is smaller than Tidmouth.

With so much to do, Thomas Land has proven a hit with families and has become a destination in its own right, to the point now where it is open for right my new plan is to have 2 senic boards that will include knapford station, gordons hill and henrys tunnel. knapford station will be made using the knapford station kit done by bachmann USA (you can use a few of these kits to make a bigger station) as there are six lines into the station i plan to see whether i could kit that on my board. the approach to knapford station from both directions will be 2 lines then becoming 6 (3 on the down line and 3 on the up line) i might make sure i use the largest bord i have to do this so i can have a couple of sidings too. going from left to right on the layout will be Knapford Station, gordon's hill and finally to go into the fiddle yard, henry's tunnel. ill get a pln done soon nd hopefully try it on here.

The name is likely derived from Sidmouth, a town on the English Channel in Devon, South West England.The cab steps are mounted on the valences instead of under the footplate.
