I have read every self-help book out there, but this was the first that put everything together in a way that made perfect sense to me.” During the mid-1980s Marks had 43 aliases and 25 companies all laundering money from dealing cannabis. After a world-wide operation he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years at a State Penitentiary in Indiana but was released in 1995 after serving seven years. This is his own story. Evans, Tristian (2016). Shared Meanings in the Film Music of Philip Glass: Music, Multimedia and Postminimalism. Routledge. p.88. ISBN 978-1-317-05571-6.

I started reading the book straight away and didn't want to put it down. I did have to re-read 2 or 3 times to make sense of it, and after each re-read more of what I had read previously made sense. But deep down, Howard Marks just comes across a generally nice guy, a guy who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to try and do it. I wouldn’t recommend following him in his chosen career path, but if you bump into him at a pub then be sure to buy him a pint.

I was proud to make that statement about myself through much of my early adult life. I was a Nice Guy. I wanted to treat people well, and I wanted to be liked. I couldn’t understand why everyone didn’t have a similar personal mantra. His activities rapidly expanded after a chance meeting with a Pakistani supplier made him realise how lucrative drug smuggling could be. After teaming up with Jim McCann, a senior member of the IRA, his business was soon bringing in huge amounts of cash and he began setting up various legitimate businesses as a front, to launder the proceeds of his hashish smuggling. At one time he claims to have had 25 such companies, 89 phone lines and 43 aliases, including the name used for the title of this book, Mr Nice, an alias he adopted after buying a passport from a convicted murderer of that name.

Dennis Howard Marks (13 August 1945 – 10 April 2016) was a Welsh drug smuggler and author who achieved notoriety as an international cannabis smuggler through high-profile court cases. At his peak he claimed to have been smuggling consignments of the drug as large as 30 tons, [2] and was connected with groups as diverse as the CIA, the IRA, MI6, and the Mafia. He was eventually convicted by the American Drug Enforcement Administration and given a 25-year prison sentence; he was released in April 1995 after serving seven years. Though he had up to 43 aliases, he became known as "Mr Nice" after he bought a passport from convicted murderer Donald Nice. [3] After his release from prison, he published a best-selling autobiography, Mr. Nice, and campaigned publicly for changes in drugs legislation. My dad, Mr Nice: life as the daughter of Britain’s best-known cannabis smuggler Published by The Guardian on 21 August, 2021 So what was he like as a father? “He enjoyed us as children. He laughed at things we did and said. He told me children’s stories and sang songs he made up for and about me. He was an energetic enthusiast and shared his interests with us – especially music, but also dancing, Monty Python, train sets, ant farms and the latest tech. He never teased us if we were scared but reassured us… He took us with him everywhere he could – round the world, restaurants and markets.
