About this deal

I absolutely loved it! Such a clever and pacy read with a glorious nod to classic Christie’ JO JAKEMAN

Dr. Stavros Constantine: a Greek physician, who, after the murder, determines Ratchett's time of death. Count Rudolph Andrenyi: husband of Countess Andrenyi, who took his wife's place as the twelfth murderer. Whatever you unwrap for Christmas, you had better hope it’s this book. This is 21st-century cosy Christmas crime that doesn’t shy away from the darkness. Eighteen passengers, seven stops, one killer Christmas read' JANICE HALLETT Morgan, Janet (1984). Agatha Christie, A Biography. New York City: HarperCollins. pp.201–04. ISBN 0-00-216330-6. I'm going to make this short. This looked like exactly the kind of wintry read I love but I never connected to the characters (unusual for me even when they're unlikable). None of these folks were given enough depth and they were a bit too much of the current moment. Additionally, while the reader knows there's a murder from the outset, the actuality of it is far too far into the story (and then the subsequent ones) for me not to call shenanigans, especially in a book of this length. So much rigamarole in the lead-up and it just got to the point that I just didn't care any longer. That's the worst thing that can happen with a book.Barnard, Robert (1990). A Talent to Deceive – an appreciation of Agatha Christie. New York City: Fontana Books. pp.199–200. ISBN 0-00-637474-3. I cannot even begin to explain how frustrating it is and how negatively it impacts my feelings about a book when the publisher presents is as something it isn’t. And in this case it’s worse than just misleading the reader, it’s dressing content that is very upsetting to a segment of readers up in a cute Christmas outfit. Which is gross and irresponsible marketing.

Cyrus Hardman: an American ex-policeman who was in love with Daisy's French nursery maid, who committed suicide after Daisy was killed. On the journey, more or less half the book, involves setting up the characters. We have Meg, a social media influencer, her aggressive reality television show partner, some students, a belittled father, an elderly woman with her adoring son, and some others. When the train is detailed and a body found, it is up to Roz to solve the crime.

Did you expect any of that having read the publisher’s summary. Yeah, I didn’t think so. And that is a HUGE problem. Pera Palace Hotel – where Christie supposedly wrote the novel, although this is not stated in either her official biography or her own Autobiography A surprisingly deeply felt adjunct to Benedict’s aggressively brainy The Christmas Murder Game (2022). N'Duka, Amanda (25 January 2017). "Manuel Garcia-Rulfo Boards 'Murder On The Orient Express'; Vivica A Fox Joins 'The Mafia Aint Dead' ". Deadline Hollywood. Los Angeles, California: Penske Media Corporation . Retrieved 27 January 2017. The reviewer in The Guardian of 12 January 1934 noted that the murder would have been "perfect" (i.e. a perfect crime) had Poirot not been on the train and also overheard a conversation between Miss Debenham and Colonel Arbuthnot before he boarded; however, Poirot's "'little grey cells' worked admirably, and the solution surprised their owner as much as it may well surprise the reader, for the secret is well kept and the manner of the telling is in Mrs Christie's usual admirable manner." [9]

Every murder mystery needs its great characters to keep you guessing and Alexandra Benedict has written in some, well lets just say interesting characters that will keep you guessing. It is Christmas and everyone is trying to be somewhere but the weather is setting in and there is travel chaos. As the title suggests the main scene is aboard the sleeper and it is heading north to the Highlands but the snow is getting worse and so the train is not going to be stopping at all the stops. On board the train is the former Met detective Roz Parker, but one by one you get to meet the leading characters and what a real mix they are. There is a social media celebrity who is constantly engaging with her followers, then we have a quiz team, there is even a stowaway on board the train, there is a TV star and many others. In the small hours of Christmas eve, miles from anywhere the train is derailed and passengers are tossed around or jolted from their sleep. And a killer strikes. Now they are all alone and who is going to be next. It is down to our heroine Roz to take control and find the killer before there are more bodies to be found. In The New York Times Book Review of 4 March 1934, Isaac Anderson wrote, "The great Belgian detective's guesses are more than shrewd; they are positively miraculous. Although both the murder plot and the solution verge upon the impossible, Agatha Christie has contrived to make them appear quite convincing for the time being, and what more than that can a mystery addict desire?" Princess Natalia Dragomiroff: a Russian princess who's ultimately revealed to be Sonia Armstrong's godmother. The perfect Christmas read . . . and puzzles galore for both readers and the players of the game’ W.C. RYAN I'm being harsh. This was still a 3 star read if you can tolerate the discussion of darker social issues. I think I'm more annoyed than I would otherwise be because I LOVE this sort of set up and I WANTED it to get it right. We do have something of a more nuanced character in Roz and I expect we will be hearing more from her in the years to come. There is a dark side to this story with some very difficult themes explored including rape which could be triggering for some. Gans, Andrew (15 March 2017). Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Poirot Facsimile Edition (Facsimile of 1934 UK first edition), 4 September 2006, Hardcover, 256 pp. ISBN 0-00-723440-6 There were things I liked about it - the characters were amalgamated well into what was set up to be a modern take on the classic mystery-on-a-train Golden Age plot (yay!) Unfortunately, it wasn't particularly twisty, the solutions were unimaginative and some of the characters behaved in ridiculous ways.
