About this deal

Once everyone has characters and has read the rules a bit and selected or created characters, it’s time to play. So one major consequence of the WOTC debacle has been the shift from many in the D&D community to explore the plethora of other gaming delights – and boy have the likes of Free League Publishing, Chaosium and Paizo benefitted – both in terms of online interest but also in oodles of hard cash been spent on these other gaming systems. In fact some companies have found it something of a challenge in keeping up with the incredible demand – especially regarding a certain Pathfinder 2e TTRPG! For suggestions on running the adventure Menace Under Otari, see “The Adventure”, below. The Adventure Area #11: The Roll20 module doesn’t have the right number of kobolds in the room. The trapmaster needs to spend three Actions to place one Snare, so her first three turns are spent putting down snares that the party can easily walk around. Remember: this is a learning experience rather than a deadly challenge. Expect the party to have little difficulty here, especially if they activate the trap from Area #10 and don’t manage to get hit themselves. Lay out the flip map on the side for level one of the dungeon, and cover most of it with sheets of paper to hide parts of the map that the players can’t see yet (essentially creating a “Fog of War” effect). Place the player’s pawns on the map at the starting point recommended in the Game Master’s Guide, and you’re ready to go.

So we were delighted when the fine folks at Paizo sent us PDF versions of the Pathfinder Beginner Box and the Starfinder Beginner Box, the second of which will feature in an upcoming article. Area #13: This area is weirdly described, and based on the game map the water appears to be in motion. It isn’t. It’s a stagnant pool that has settled into a low point in the floor. The Beginner Box for Foundry VTT includes all rules content and journals from the PDF, as well as original sections designed from the ground up to guide and instruct users on how best to experience Pathfinder Second Edition and learn Foundry VTT features at the same time. Whether you are a veteran GM introducing your players to Pathfinder Second Edition for the first time, or a newcomer just starting out with tabletop RPGs, the Beginner Box is for you. I suggest making some adjustments to the room, and offer some unsolicited advice to the party. If anyone in the party is proficient in Thievery, explicitly tell them that they think they could disable the mechanisms. Also give the players descriptive clues that the smashed mechanism in the bottom-left corner has resulted in the statue affecting that part of the room less. If the d10 roll for the statue’s action doesn’t result in one of the options which is affected by broken mechanisms, it may take the party several round to notice the effects of disabling/breaking the mechanisms. I also recommend reducing the damage from 2d6 to 2d4, reducing the hardness of the mechanisms to 6, and reducing the Theivery DC from 20 to 18.

The Beginner Box assumes that you’ll have characters equivalent to a cleric, a fighter, a rogue, and a wizard. It’s totally fine to deviate from that classic 4-class party, but for the Beginner Box I recommend staying close to that makeup unless everyone the group is experienced with tabletop RPGs and ready to handle any gaps in the party’s capabilities. This article covers the Pathfinder Second Edition Beginner Box. For the Pathfinder First Edition equivalent, see Beginner Box (First Edition). There's no room to do four of the bounties on this schedule, since they are limited to level 1 like 2-11 is. However, doing 3 bounties before 2-11 and then one quest afterwards would work. But yeah having actually owned all three of these boxes the D&D 5e starters box wasn't a bad buy, but compared to the PF beginners boxes? YIKES." Something that I have to admit I didn’t expect: the Hero’s Handbook has a section that basically amounts to GM-less play for the starter adventure. It gives a solo player the option to run the adventure in the style of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. You go to a numbered entry, read the description (which is the text the GM would normally read), possibly fight a monster, and then choose from available options that send you to the next entry in the chain. “ Open the chest, go to #32. Put the amulet on the altar, go to #41.” I didn’t have time to do it for the purposes of this review, but at some point, I might try and run through it just to see how it goes.

The boxed set is built to give a gaming group everything they need to get a game going, ranging from a set of fancy dice – colour-coded to give you a chance of distinguishing the d8 from the d10 – through to pre-generated characters. Where many other kits pride themselves on being about as minimalist as they can be, the Pathfinder team have gleefully leant in to all the props and tools that make their game stand out.

High-resolution character artwork and unique monster tokens for 56 Pathfinder bestiary creatures, 36 heroic characters, and 13 non-player characters.

Overall, the Pathfinder Beginner Box is an excellent product that provides everything needed to start playing the Pathfinder RPG. It is well-designed, easy to use, and includes high-quality components. Whether you are a seasoned tabletop gamer or completely new to the hobby, the Pathfinder Beginner Box is a great choice for anyone looking to explore the world of roleplaying games.

Maybe there’s no one in your life playing these kinds of games, or perhaps social anxiety makes you wince at the thought of learning rules live at the table. Paizo’s new Pathfinder Beginner Box solves some of these problems, making the barrier to entry into the popular RPG paper-thin. At the same time, this starter set is also a dense little box of goodies that can help newer groups enhance their game. Thanks JTT. That is how I interpreted the rules but I wanted to be sure I had that right and that it had not changed. My son will live despite the limitation :-D Community / Forums / Organized Play / Pathfinder Society / Paizo Blog: Pathfinder Beginner Box Sanctioning

It’s also important to note that this encounter was designed assuming that the party has a good-aligned cleric in the party who can cast Heal. Using the 3-Action version of Heal both heals living creatures (the party, mostly), and harms undead creatures in the area. Using Heal in this way makes this encounter much more manageable for the party. I got this rule wrong while running the encounter, and it nearly resulted in a TPK (total party kill). Despite the name, “Session 0” doesn’t need to be handled with an actual scheduled session. Conducting it over a shared text discussion works fine. SMS text messages, discord, etc. all work great. I’ve conducted numerous Session 0’s this way and it has never been a problem. Choosing The GM The books are beautifully designed – the covers are stunning and the artwork throughout is gorgeously powerful and downright gorgeous. Throughout the book, the artwork not only supports and exemplifies the basics of Pathfinder, but also looks beautiful as a separate entity on its own with an impressive attention to lore and narrative detail that clearly shows as a labour of love from the game’s writers. The feel for the authentic nature of the mythos is rarely seen to this level of quality

Even if you plan to play using the pre-generated characters, I recommmend creating a character as a learning exercise if you plan to play Pathfinder 2e beyond the Beginner Box. Everyone, including the GM, should take part in this exercise. The most intimidating aspect of modern tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) is the character sheet. Experienced players can scan one and discern a particular character’s strengths in an instant, whereas newer players just see a jumble of numbers that makes no sense at all. The Beginner Box Hero’s Handbook solves that problem by adding an introductory dungeon that doesn’t actually require a character sheet at all. The Pathfinder Beginner Box contains everything you need to learn how to play the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, including rules to create your own fantasy hero and tools to make your own amazing stories.
