About this deal

St Goar is possibly the best base for exploring the Rhine Valley, halfway along the Rhine Gorge with everywhere within reach both sides of the river thanks to the ferry. Worth a trip, too, is the Blue Pool nature reserve, around a deep rain-filled clay pit that is turned a vibrant shade by suspended clay particles. The surrounding heathland is home to rare green sand lizards, buzzards and sika deer. It also has a super tearoom. Fuling is on the brink of reform, and Hessler feels privileged to be there. He watches students wrestle with conflicting ideas and look at the future as something they can shape for themselves instead of a forced doctrine. He asks the students for their opinions on economic and political policies and revolution, and he enjoys debating with them. This teaches the students to think for themselves, but it also teaches Hessler lifelong lessons about a China few get to experience. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted. Having been a part of this happy place for almost 40 years, and having rafted all over the world, I can safely say river people and the incredible culture they inhabit are the best examples of human cooperation to be found on this planet.”

Top tip– For the best view of Bacharach, climb the Postenturm (Post Tower), part of the town wall circuit, in the vineyard just to the north of the town.

There were two of us. We had been sent to work as teachers, and both of us were young: I was twenty-seven and Adam Meier was twenty-two. We had heard almost nothing about Fuling. I knew that part of the city would be flooded by the new Three Gorges Dam, and I knew that for many years Fuling had been closed to outsiders. Other than that I had been told very little. The journey takes less than five minutes. You pay as you board. Cars cost €5.30, adults €1.70 and children 6-14 €1. The ferries run from 5.30 am to 9.00 pm daily, with slightly later starts on weekend days. Boppard is in the middle of the one castle-free zone in the Rhine Valley. Travel a few miles and suddenly two appear at once. Sterrenberg and Liebenstein Castles are just 200 metres apart on the high ridge above the right bank of the Rhine. During spring tides, the water is forced up through a narrow gap and, thanks to the increased volume, creates a wave that’s pushed inland. You’ll see surfers on it if you time your visit right. On the Town: With beer-soaked floorboards and surly bartenders, it may not be the classiest joint, but readers consistently touted El Rancho Tavern as the place to grab a beer. (There are 20 of them on draft.) “If you don't have anything important to do the next day, the Ranch is the place to go,” recommends Eric Parker, an ER nurse.

This river is the third longest river in the UK. Rising on Biddulph Moor in Staffordshire, it meanders through the Midlands before emptying out between Hull and Immingham on the North Sea coast. Apparently the port was so busy that the workers didn’t even have time for toilet breaks. Nature nonetheless had to take its course, so the workers – known as Rampenschisser – would do their business (number two) on the riverbank. The air-conditioned apartment consists of 2 bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and a coffee machine, and 2 bathrooms with a hot tub and a hair dryer. A TV is provided. Marksburg Castle is one of the outstanding castles in Germany, and one of the best three castles on the Rhine (along with Rheinfels and Rheinstein) to visit. ln 1820, the construction of a bridge and the arrival of regular train services once again promoted trade and the establishment of many small factories helped to stimulate the economy. Just as the cardinals had in the 14th century, the families of the Avignon Bourgeois established their holiday resorts in the hills of Montaut, where they enjoyed the beautiful views of Avignon and the heart of the Rhône valley. It’s so cool to see a giant lake freighter one minute and paddle boarders or a rowing club go by a few minutes later!” Kerkertser Platte is a viewpoint to the north of the Marksburg and village. It’s a 15-20 minute hike from the village – and if you want to photograph the Castle, late afternoon and evening is the best time for this. Everyone in this town appears to celebrate the river culture, from rafters, kayakers, and tubers non-stop sipping beers at one of four local micro-breweries, to fishermen joining in upon a successful day on the waters. The accessible Animas River, flowing parallel to the town’s Main Street, is accommodating to anyone’s ability, from class I to class V, to practice a watersport. The Animas is also completely public within city limits, and is known as the best urban trout fishery in America, according to the locals. Historic steam engine train travels from Durango to Silverton through the San Juan Mountains along the Animas River in Colorado, USA. St Goar is midway along the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and the flexibility of the ferry over the river means you can explore either side of the Rhine in in either direction. Richmond, Virginia on the James River is hailed for its amazing urban whitewater, with class III and IV rapids. The river offers outdoor recreation for people of all ages and experience in the forms of more mild rafting, swimming, and walks along the river. James River, VA

This is a guest blog highlighting some of America’s Best River Towns by American Rivers SM — written by Katrina Cubanski and Ciara Regan, two amazing interns who worked with the Communications team this summer. To the north, the nearest major Rhine river town is Boppard, a great Rhine day trip with gorgeous medieval architecture, wineries, a fine parish church, Roman ruins and a great cable car ride taking you to one of the best views in the Rhine Valley. Stunning Bacharach Schloss Philippsburg in Braubach Try To See– Schloss Stolzenfels is the white wedding cake chateau on the left bank of the Rhine, a few miles south of Koblenz. This small Museum captures this episode of local history in time. Blücher’s quarters are decorated as they would have been at the time, and there’s also a detailed exhibition on the crossing. The village isn’t quite as picturesque as Bacharach, but it’s got an unbeatable view across the river to Burg Katz, one of the most beautiful castles on the Rhine.

In the centre of the South Downs national park and home to its official visitor centre, Midhurst combines gorgeously buxom countryside with a wealth of cutesy stores. While neighbouring Petworth is tumbling with antiques shops, Midhurst is all posh-boho independents, for all your bunting and billowing-cotton-dress needs. Community members have made tremendous progress towards making the James a clean, safe, and accessible river for everyone to enjoy.” Pittsburgh, PA Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things): Goodheart, Adam. " The Last Days of Fuling." The New York Times. February 11, 2001. Retrieved on July 13, 2014. Rheinstein and Reichenstein Castles are two miles further downstream, south of the village of Trechtingshausen. 3. Bacharach Bacharach and the Rhine from the Postenturm The Altes Haus (Old House) winery in Bacharach

There are several quirky museums in Rüdesheim worth exploring. The best of these is Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Cabinet, a wonderful collection of over 400 instruments, housed in the spectacular Brömserhof building. You’ll need to book your time slot in advance.
