I loved, SO MUCH, the recasting of Snow White's 7 Dwarves. I don't want to say too much, because spoilers. But it was a great choice. A lovely enchanting book about a knight who had never fought a dragon and a dragon who has never fought a knight! An interesting twist on the usual traditional tale! Wilmerding, John. American Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Art. Rev. ed. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1988: 154, repro. I don’t know much about the pre-Depression era in America so it was interesting to see a version of Snow White told during that time. Even though that wasn’t the focus of the story. An illustrated collection of fifteen tales from the brothers Grimm, retold for younger readers. Stories include Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb and The Frog PrincE.

American Paintings: An Illustrated Catalogue. National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1992: 199, repro. Personally, this book would only be suitable in older classrooms, and even then I'm not sure it is the most appropriate. A retelling of the tale. Set in Great Depression New York City. The seven dwarves are in fact seven little boys, street urchins. Amazing how faithful you can get in a (mostly?) mundane tale. Henri alluded to Snow in New York in a diary entry of March 5, 1902: “Painted snow storm. street. high houses with well of sky between. gray looming sky. brownish houses near horizon. figures. red note electric street lamp. snow.” He identified the exact subject in his Record Book: “N.Y. down E. on 55th St. from 6 Ave. Brown houses at 5 Ave. storm effect. snow. wagon to right.” [2] [2] This is a very short illustrated picture book in which the tale of Snow White is relocated to 1920’s New York, (think Great Gatsby era) and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic.I know this graphic novel is getting a lot of praise for the illustrations but, unfortunately, even this aspect of Snow White didn't impress me that much. I really liked the illustrations in this, they were beautiful and very film noir which I’ve never seen in a graphic novel before. Although I don’t read a lot of graphic novels so that may be why… Phelan cleverly uses this urban setting to tell Snow White's story and explore class relationships. Snow's relationship with the "dwarfs" here is much more meaningful than the Disneyfied version. urn:lcp:snowwhiteinnewyo0000fren:epub:0707f7a7-b8f9-4764-952e-bb9394f1ad73 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier snowwhiteinnewyo0000fren Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t9v20wn8v Invoice 1652 Isbn 0192798081

I don't get who the prince is. I was an the verge of giving this 2 stars, but I decided that by using our knowledge of the story it was worth 3. This is close to be a wordless story. I particularly liked how the mirror was portrayed as a 'newspaper', something very relevant to society today and the prince, now a reporter. The writer/illustrator has thought long and hard about the adaptation of the book and this shows in the imagery used in the book.

pure and delightful self indulgence . . . done with tremendous style and an unfailing sense of period.' ( Junior Bookshelf) The feminist in me wishes that there could have been a retelling of the saving of Snow, but I guess we'll just chalk it up to magic and leave it. The wavy, watercolor art of the book is beautiful and creates a dream-like atmosphere. In some scenes, it was frustrating because I was unsure of what I was seeing or why. But, dreams are like that, I guess. On the whole, it works beautifully. Discouraged by the fact that his New York cityscapes failed to sell and increasingly attracted to figurative art, Henri ceased to paint urban subjects and resolved to become a portraitist late in 1902. In retrospect, the expressive intensity and painterly fluency of Snow in New York qualify it as one of Henri’s most accomplished works from this early period in his career. It exemplifies his advice that students should strive to capture “the romance of snow-filled atmosphere and the grimness of a house.” [10] [10] Set in the 1930's in a jazz-like New York City, the book takes a spin on the original story of Snow White. This imitation of this book portrays the dwarfs as musicians and the much loved snow-white as a famous socialite.this is a retelling of snow white that u really shouldn’t call a retelling because it’s more of a “resetting” because, like, the only thing they really changed is the setting. that's literally it. like, sure, why not.

I was convinced for about 2/3rds of this book that it would be a 3-star read, but it won me over in the end. American Paintings: An Illustrated Catalogue.
