About this deal

Ok, maybe on some level, in a particular emotional state and context, everybody does want love and intimacy.

Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple | Goodreads Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple | Goodreads

Someone at a Distance is a beautiful and moving story, not just about love, but the lies we tell to protect love. Whipple writes her characters with the kind of understanding that comes from a keen observer of the ordinary. Her style is clear-eyed and precise, superbly elegant and subtle, witty but never showy. Her characters live and breathe and leave little footprints wherever they go; even the minor ones. And it’s her attention to the small things — sentences that are only half-finished, furtive glances, hands that brush one another in passing, the smell of nicotiana on a hot summer night, that make the storytelling so powerful. We see the inevitability of the drama, long before the characters in the middle of it.I’m still not sure if she was “on something” whilst she sat there on the curb balling her eyes out.

The effect on his wife and children, on his partner at work, the way his life is destroyed in an instant of mid-life madness, all combine to create a novel of exceptional insight. This is a strongly moral book, which shows Ellen as a fulfilled yet dangerous innocent, with a touch of smugness which blinds her to her husband's vanity. Yet neither of them are more smug, or more vain, than anyone else...which is why the novel has a universal quality lifting it out of the realm of the commonplace. Not just to, say, leech off someone for safety, or to take from someone because they have something that we want.Unfortunately, if you hold someone to a higher standard lovingly, often, this can be when people leave. For a long time now, the western world has been a society that doesn’t respect nurturing and family.

Someone at a Distance" is about Louise who is one of the most atrocious characters I've ever read about. She's selfish, manipulating and heartless and right from the beginning you can't help but feel great distaste for her.Yet, there is something about the extra work it takes to date long distance that Johnson enjoys. “The bonds I create are strong because you have to talk all the time and really express how you feel, both parties are aware of how much effort is being put in to maintain the relationship, and that makes you feel more loved and respected. You could have anyone next to you but you chose me and I’m across the world. You’re choosing to make time for me even in a crazy time zone when we’re both tired.” End of Transmission is not one person’s story. It includes Positive Voices speakers from the Terence Higgins Trust. Niamh, Stephen, Allan, Tim, Roland, Ese, Jess and Mary are people living with HIV who share their stories to help end stigma and HIV transmission.
