In Warhammer 40,000: Conquest, a two-player Living Card Game, you take the part of a warlord, leading your armies into battle against your opponent in a bid to claim glorious victory. Even as you lead your bravest warriors into battle, you must plan for the future, establishing a presence on planets before the tides of war consume them in blood and fire. You must conquer the Traxis sector by strength of arms for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. She’s sort of into it. We high five when the dice go hot and boo when they run cold. She understands the basics and makes some solid decisions and some poor ones. We actually need to use some of the wargear cards, these one-time special abilities, to stave off Brother Gallain’s death. I put the wargear cards away in my second solo play as they simply weren’t needed, so I’m pleased that they find use in this play.

Crypt Hunters is based on the Lost Patrol game engine, but the game balance is improved in every way. It’s still a challenge to beat the game, but the Stormcasts don’t die as fast as the Scouts in Lost Patrol, and have three power cards to spice things up. The game has a really satisfying combination of tile placement, which can get very strategic once you get the hang of it and dice-driven combat. As games play fast, about 30 minutes (or a bit longer for the “campaign” two-part game), it doesn’t feel grindy, and is a great filler or warm-up game. Like Space Hulk or similar games, being the Nighthaunt player feels a bit like acting as the game master for the Stormcast player, so I recommend to switch sides after each game to keep things fresh for both players.

Set in the dark sci-fantasy world of Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer 40,000 Dice Masters allows players to build teams of iconic characters and warriors to battle it out for supremacy using custom dice and cards. Warhammer 40,000 Dice Masters uses the game system designed by Mike Elliott and Eric M. Lang for Dice Masters and is completely compatible with other games in the line. Four factions are available when the series first launches, and players can either build teams using a single faction or mix and match to create their own Dice Masters team. Recreate the ultimate struggle between the noble defenders of humanity and the alien hordes of the Tyranids. Board the immense living bio-construct ships of Hive Fleet Kraken, explore the intestinal labyrinths within, and do battle with the terrifying warriors of the Hive Mind.Alternatively, if you want to go for a more narrative spin, you can base your choice of tactics on your Chapter’s history in the lore (or one you’ve created for them). The Scythes of the Emperor, for example, were nearly annihilated by Hive Fleet Kraken during the Second Tyrannic War and swore vengeance against them. Preferred Enemy (choosing Tyranids as the keyword) would, therefore, be a great option, as would Indomitable for the stoic determination they showed when faced with the numberless hordes of Tyranids. The Horus Heresy: Betrayal At Calth is a fantastic standalone boxed game of claustrophobic tunnel combat, set during the Word Bearers’ invasion of the Ultramarine world of Calth. Emphasising fast-paced squad-based combat during six exciting missions, it allows players to choose their side and command a force of beautifully detailed Citadel miniatures in a brutal war for survival, during one of the iconic battles of the Horus Heresy.
