I'd been eighteen years old. I'd known nothing about suffering or responsibility or loss, but somehow, I'd known this soul-deep king of love that I now wondered if most people never found. It cut open a vein in me that never stopped flowing.” Though most of the story is focused on Emery I actually understood August much better and I had soft spot for him from the beginning. It was easy for me to figure out he didn’t have anything to do with Lily even though it was mentioned more than once that he did something that night he feel guilty about. It adds mysteriousness to his character and I couldn’t help feeling sorry for him. I would have left island ages ago if I was in his place. His grandfather was a cruel old tyrant who beat him and worked him tirelessly in the apple orchard that has been in his family. He made August’s life miserable and no one on the island helped him or understood him except Emery. I liked how he strongly believed nothing has changed and the island is still as poisonous as it was before he left. He saw people for who they are and he wasn’t wrong about most of them. I loved him for trying to make things better between him and Emery regardless of what the islanders said or did.

The island wasn’t home, even if it once had been. And she was right. No one came to Saoirse to stay. Mystery wasn’t very much surprising. I could figure out most of things, some from the beginning, while other around middle of the story. It was part reason I was very impatient with the pace. There is a second chance romance, as well as interesting family and friend dramas. This book also has fantasy as one of its descriptions, but honestly, fantasy could have been left out and I would have still had the same feelings for the book. It’s great that the fantasy didn’t overpower the book, but it didn’t have as much essence as I have seen in other fanta The story is about lies, betrayal, secrets, family, community, magic, and young undying love. It was interesting to figure out what happened fourteen years ago. Mystery of murder and why August was accused of murder stays at the forefront of the story. It’s really slow to the point that I was very close to skipping chapters and read last few chapters so I finally can get to the point. The magical realism captured in the story aids in subtly highlighting the strange beliefs the families hold dear and enhances the flavor of the moodiness that the author has wonderfully created. One can feel the autumn winds and the coming winter in the author's beautiful writing. Told thru multiple points of view interweaving the past and the present with romance, deception, secrets, and lies, Spells For Forgetting has everything and more. Emery and August were such wonderful characters, both unable to move on and forget the love they shared, learning to trust each other the second time, and with the kind of past that hangs over their heads, it was particularly beguiling in intensity. With Emery determined to find the truth of their friend Lily’s death, the layers in the story untangle in bits and pieces luring the reader to read a little more to get to that unexpected ending. I am looking at the rating of over 4 stars next to this title and I am wondering if these people read the same book that I did. Maybe they just don't care that it was a bad book and rated it high because they like Young's other books?

Spells for Forgetting: the magical and compelling mystery

The ending not only felt rushed, but it very nearly falls apart because of the character chosen to narrate the key reveal. It felt like an easy out. It's super difficult to say any more than that without spoiling the whole book... An island full of secrets and mysteries. A murder years ago that still haunts the town with a love that could be deadly to all involved. The atmosphere is great tho, i like the idea of the magical island where apple grows and trees changing color in a night and people still practice witchcraft and the island is oftenly rain and gloomy. I think it’s the only thing i love from the book despite all the disappointment i feelSpells for Forgetting audiobook with nine narrators is confusing. Their voices aren't that different from one another and most do voicing of the other characters, as well, making things feel fairly muddled in the mix. I would prefer one female and one male narrator with excellent voicing skills. Less is more, I believe, and with that said, it was still a compelling listen. In this article, my plan is to explain what forgetful spells are. When we talk about forgetful spells, many people have this idea that we are talking about spells that will make you not forget things and how to prevent memory loss in old age. Well, this is really not all that these spells can do. What are forgetful spells?

I am always skeptical when a YA author ventures into the adult territory because it might be a source of tone problems, and unfortunately it was the case with this book. The main characters (August, Emery, Dutch) are in their mid-thirties, but their voice still sounds very young to me. Additionally, the voice of the side characters (who are slightly older) almost blends in, which renders the story very monotonic. This pain inside me was like broken glass clutched in a fist. I knew it was drawing blood. Bleeding me out, all day, every day. But still, I couldn’t just open my fingers and let it go. Because this wasn’t that kind of love.” I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and the dark, atmospheric setting. The author also did an excellent job at incorporating secrets, guilt, and betrayals in a way that connected the characters and created depth in their relationships. However, the first 30% of the book was painfully slow and honestly quite boring. Almost nothing happened, and it wasn’t until about 40% through the work that we began getting hints to the mystery and began to feel a sense of foreboding. There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told. I knew, because I was one of them.” Adrienne Young, Spells for ForgettingThough her mouth wasn’t visible behind the scarf, I could see the frown in her eyes and the look edged too close to suspicion. I’d been given that look many times before. A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love Wanting a fresh start, August and his mother, Eloise quietly and abruptly leave Saoirse leaving behind them scars from bad memories and the disdain from their former townsfolk. August told no one of their departure and no one cared except for Emery — the girl that held August’s heart.
