Another side quest in the game winds up leading Spider-Man to the penthouse apartment of Dmitri Smerdyakov, better known as the shape-shifting villain Chameleon. Thanks to a series of pre-recorded messages, Spidey learns about the troubled history between Chameleon and his half-brother, Kraven. He then escapes a death trap meant for Kraven himself.
As promised by Marvel, this is a genuinely green, high school-age wall-crawler. Unlike either of his big-screen predecessors – Tobey Maguire was 27 when he first played the role; Andrew Garfield 29 – at 20 years old, British actor Tom Holland looks like he really could still be a teenager. That marks Spider-Man: Homecoming out nicely from the rest of the rapidly-aging MCU and ensures the new Peter Parker needn’t be rushed into full-time membership of The Avengers. Admittedly, that would seem to be more than enough. But the magic of No Way Home is that it uses all of those previous Spider-Man films to its advantage. Yes, the references to what we might call Spider-Man Parts One to Eight are reliant on the nostalgic loyalty of Spider-fans, but they also enrich the new film, increasing its emotional depth and range. They even enhance the earlier films, retroactively, adding new facets to characters we thought we'd seen the last of, and giving them the momentous send-offs they might not have had the last time around. Superhero-sceptics probably won't be converted. But if you have any love for the genre, then No Way Home will put a silly grin on your face for two hours, and might just put a few tears in your eyes. As for Harry, we have yet to see the younger Osborn become Green Goblin, either. Spider-Man 2 swinging physics are still a joy, and the silly added villains like Mysterio are a great diversion. Still love this one to bits, ugly character models, pizza song, and all. The N64 version of TASM is surprisingly an accurate port, but I feel this game is largely well regarded because of nostalgia.

The first is 1965’s The Amazing Spider-Man #33. That issue features one of the most iconic Spidey moments ever, as Peter is trapped beneath tons of rubble and has to summon all his strength and courage to break free. We may see Cindy Moon gain spider powers of her own and learn the ropes of the superhero game from Miles. Maybe Spider-Man 3 will allow gamers to play as three different Spider-People? The more the merrier. But you have to remember that Spider-Man 2 set the standard for how web swinging should be like. Its physics and mechanics were replicated in the modern, Insomniac Spider-Man games because they were simply the best out of all the games.
