Vivid and otherworldly, this masterfully told novel brings together many threads of family history, personal memory, collective choices, sexuality, and a realm of mysteries and mythic creatures with deep origins and powers . . . A striking and imaginative debut - Booklist

Prismatic and dazzling, Palmer's debut entrances with its stories-within-stories structure and loving portrayal of two sisters coming into their own power while grappling with family secrets and tales untold. Anansi and other folkloric figures and deities of their Jamaican Trinidadian heritage weave throughout the novel, transforming from teller to teller, from one generation to the next—at times haunting or healing, seductive or terrifying. Palmer's ever-rippling prose also shifts deftly—from magical to macabre, playful to tender, always with compassion for all." —Angela Mi Young Hur, author of Folklorn Discover POLITICO Pro In-depth reporting, data and actionable intelligence for policy professionals – all in one place. Let me tell you a story. This one will give you hope. Once upon a time there was a girl. And this girl grew to be a woman. And this woman had the ability to conjure stories from ghosts. Now the conjure woman had three daughters who loved her stories so much that when she died it was all that she left them. Little did they know that these stories had a life before them. That this book had a life before me. Terrace, Vincent (2008). Encyclopedia of Television Series, Pilots and Specials, Volume 2. New York, NY: McFarland. p.405. SP: I’ve always been really drawn to sister stories. I’m really close to my siblings. Particularly me and my younger sister, growing up we were very close and would often write stories together and talk about making movies together. I feel like there’s this way that your sister can be your best friend in this really beautiful way, but that sisters can also have such a complicated relationship, and how hard it can be when your sister is struggling and not knowing what to do, or when it feels like you’re no longer communicating the way you used to. I wanted to explore all of those things. Beatrice and Tony Porter had never heard of Burgh Island when, on a November evening in 1985, a friend of their daughter rang them to say she had seen an item on local television about a Devon island that was up for sale, complete with a 1929 art deco hotel. After 18 months as Truss’ principal private secretary in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Catsaras is being shunted across to No. 10 to take on the same role.

SN: What was important for you about centering the sister relationship, and what drew you to making that the main relationship of the story?

SP: Right now, I work with survivors who are being charged for resisting abuse in their relationships, so self-defense and things like that. We do advocacy and emotional support and trainings for other organizations that might interact with survivors but not know it, and criminalized survivors in particular. In some ways, it’s very different, but then also social work is a lot about human connection and hearing people’s stories, and sometimes the most that you can do for people is to show you’re there for them. It’s not always the concrete changes in terms of advocacy because that can be such an uphill battle. And of course, both are in the gender-based violence world that impacts so many of us. Beatrix Potter's parents did not discourage higher education. As was common in the Victorian era, women of her class were privately educated and rarely went to university. Potter's father, Rupert William Potter (1832–1914), was educated at Manchester College by the Unitarian philosopher James Martineau. [10] [11] He then trained as a barrister in London. Rupert practised law, specialising in equity law and conveyancing. He married Helen Leech (1839–1932) on 8 August 1863 at Hyde Unitarian Chapel, Gee Cross. Helen was the daughter of Jane Ashton (1806–1884) and John Leech, a wealthy cotton merchant and shipbuilder from Stalybridge. Helen's first cousins were siblings Harriet Lupton ( née Ashton) and Thomas Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde. It was reported in July 2014 that Potter had personally given a number of her own original hand-painted illustrations to the two daughters of Arthur and Harriet Lupton, who were cousins to both Beatrix Potter and Catherine, Princess of Wales. SP: I wanted to show all of the minute ways that violence can affect us. And not just the obvious physical violence, but the ways that a tone of voice or a glance can mean a certain thing to a survivor and can be a form of power and control. It was also important to me because before I had this job, I worked with a lot of young people who were also impacted by the justice system. And a lot of those were young men who may have engaged in violence in general but also sometimes with their partners. I feel like it’s important to look at the whole cycle of violence and how it impacts everyone, and to not just say, “These people are abusers, and these people are victims,” because sometimes it can be more complicated than that. A lot of the young people I worked with were also victims of violence by their communities, by their families, by schools, and I wanted to show that with Nigel — to not just have him be a villain but to show how he got that way and how he was struggling to try to be better, and the kind of ways that he was stripped of some of his humanity by his dad and feeling like he had to be a certain kind of man.
