About this deal

In the years since I began reading her, I knew one thing was for certain: Melissa de la Cruz writes dazzling secrets, explosive drama and luxurious lifestyles brilliantly. I had high hopes for The Birthday Girl because of this. And while I genuinely enjoyed The Birthday Girl, it was purely dishy entertainment, I couldn't help but wish there was something more to it. I didn't really like this one that much...not necessarily because of the age gap; my parents have almost 9 years between them, but because of the maturity of the characters, and their suitability for each other. I just didn't find it a believable relationship. The premise for The Birthday Girl is very bland and it only gets blander as you start to read. The thing is, it did have the potential to be a good story of a woman who intends to keep her skeletons in the closet and does not want anyone to know about her past that could change their view on her. Especially if her secrets are horrifying. Birthday, Personalised childrens books, unique to every child, first birthday gift, for girls and boys, birthday gift, childrens gift As the days go by, though, it's becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can't touch her, and I shouldn't want to.

The advice, the words of wisdom were so precious. He could be your friend yet he can also be the protective figure, someone you can rely on eyes closed. Ellie is one that has it all. She has the handsome husband, beautiful and accomplished children, and three homes. She’s a fashion designer and has a solid group of friends. Here's the thing: The story and characters do little to nothing to even make the story sound like a thriller. The first time Pike and Jordan meet, I definitely feel their connection and from then on, I was already rooting for them! And the sexual tension between the two...? HOT DAMN. It was really great. I have no words to explain how sexy it was, to be honest, haha. And, like, Cole who? Ellie seems to have it all: the perfect husband, 4 beautiful children, a booming career, and more houses than she knows what to do with. Now it’s her 40th birthday and she’s invited everyone who’s anyone to attend her extravagant bash.

Jordan is a strong and independent woman. She may be only nineteen, but she’s a hard worker and wise beyond her years. Her boyfriend Cole... not so much. He gets them in a bit of a tough spot and they end up moving in with Cole’s father, Pike. Oh Pike… I freaking loved Pike. Everything about him. Pike is 38. He’s a great man and wants to help out his son. The sparks between Pike and Jordan fly, even though neither one wants that. Gah. It’s insane. You just need to read it for yourself to see how this one turns out… Personalised Birthday Wooden Name Hoop Circle Sign Wall Plaque Wood MDF Décor Accessories Multiple ColourEllie has come a long way. She is married to Todd (he also has a 3rd person POV) and they have four kids. She has a fancy fashion line. But can she afford this expensive party? In the past Leo is poor and struggling. So it was interesting to see the change in lifestyle. Melissa grew up in Manila and moved to San Francisco with her family, where she graduated high school salutatorian from The Convent of the Sacred Heart. She majored in art history and English at Columbia University (and minored in nightclubs and shopping!). This book was received as an ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Dutton in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

But on the day of the party, Ellie receives text messages from someone in her past, someone she hasn’t seen in 24 years. You’ve always watched me, haven’t you? Always wanted to have your fun with me.” I falter, knowing what she says is true. I’ve wanted her since the first time I saw her. “It’s okay,” she whispers. “I always knew, and I always liked it. Keep watching me, Mr. Lawson.” There is some angst in the last third of the book when Jordan and Pike start seeing each other (because it took that long for that to happen), but I found it to be very bearable. It probably helped that Jordan is a mature character and there is a lot of self-reflection going on with characters. The romance was lovely as well. It was a nice slow burn with plenty of tension. The romance and age difference is handled with tact and done incredibly well. The situation with the boyfriend is as well. There was simply nothing about this book that I didn't love. This was clearly a book the author wanted to write and was meant to, and it came across vividly clear in the writing. I fell so hard for this story and these characters. In all, the good far outweighed the bad in this book, so that I was able to finish it within a few hours. The last Penelope Douglas book I read was Punk 57, which I did not care for, but I’m happy to say that Birthday Girl was a very worthwhile read. Something happened which left Cole and Jordan move into Cole’s father’s home and, well... you can just imagine how this goes. I was so excited when they moved in because draaaaaama. And there is definitely plenty of drama and angst. When she doesn’t want to sleep with him or be intimate, he barely resists and blames her for all his shit and how he’s not good enough for her (because he clearly isn’t) and how she has her shit together (because obviously, she does as she’s not lazy and she’s also not a loser like him. Harsh, I know).

Birthday Girl - Kindle edition by Douglas, Penelope

Jordan has nowhere else to go when her boyfriend offers to let her move in with him and his dad. Working a dead-end job, with her relationship sputtering, she jumps at the opportunity, expecting to help out around the house in exchange. What she doesn’t anticipate is for her heart to race every time Pike pulls into the driveway, or to burn when their eyes meet over the breakfast table. He’s kind and listens to her and protects her in a way no man ever has before. Her sister once told her there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable. Only Pike isn’t the unavailable one…she is. I've been putting off this review because quite a few of my friends on here love this! Apologies to those of you who did love this, please don't be offended, different tastes and all that.....What it's about: It is Ellie de Florent-Stinson's fortieth birthday and she has decided to throw a huge party in her new Palm Springs home. She invites everyone she knows, new friends, old friends, old flames, famous people she barely knows- no one is exempt from being invited, and no expense is too great. After all, she has a thriving fashion line, multiple homes, a loving husband, and amazing children; life is good. But as the night goes on her old secrets start to bubble up from the past, and something that happened when she was sixteen becomes impossible to avoid any longer.
