Samuel Pepys was a Member of Parliament and worked for the Navy. He lived in London during the Great Plague outbreak, and kept a very detailed diary in which he recorded his thoughts about several important historical events, including the plague outbreak and the Great Fire of London. His diary was eventually published for the first time in the 19th century. But prosecutors agreed to let the students plead guilty to an alternative charge of incitement to wound with intent, which is punishable by up to life imprisonment, although jail terms meted out by the District Court are capped atseven years. During the outbreak of 1665 - 1666, 68,596 deaths were recorded in London alone, while thousands more across the country died from the plague.
