Still having the original drive, that was still working (but being unreliable), I was able to clone it to the refurb drive. From my experience just the same size or bigger, the YouView drive had lots of tiny partitions at the front end but the main one was 850GB (this being a 1TB drive). If anyone else has tried and had some success I would be very grateful if you can let me know how you did it.

look carefully at the top of the can. It should be slightly concave, if it looks convex then chances are the capacitor is on it's way out even though it may otherwise look OK.

The YouView user interface here is the same as you'll find on the old BT box, as well as on unbranded boxes, or that from rivals TalkTalk. The actual BT element only really impacts on the experience when you step into the sections that BT adds to the mix.

You don’t get a choice of power modes if you want to use the YouView app on your smartphone. This needs the box to be in high-power mode to work and – like Sky+ – allows you to remotely schedule recordings. Press the Power button once on the Control Panel on the top of the box. (A small amount of patience is now required) The "Enter Maintenance Mode Y/N (Y: POWER)" disappears from the BT Logo – Waking Up screen. After several seconds the screen goes blank. After several more seconds the Maintenance Mode menu finally appears. Reasons I opted for this unit was because it had WiFi so no need to connect via cable for the streaming services. If you navigate across the top menu, you will be able to search for the content or actor you are looking for. All youview boxes provide 5 different resets. The easiest to access is via their menus, but that will also delete all your recordings and you would also need to setup everything again.

Finally, there’s BT TV, which lets you access BT’s on-demand content. This includes a range of TV shows and films, including the AMC channel. a) When squirting the A/V via HDMI directly into his TV (Panasonic TX-P42GT60B), there are absolutely no video or audio problems. These are designated by three blue dots under the channel name, such at BT Sport, which is free for BT Infinity and BT Broadband customers, and sits in the EPG ready for you to watch, along with ESPN. I live nearby, and when I bring my own Humax DTR-T1000 to their house it receives the above channels no problem. I get the channels no problems at my own house a mile away. Looking at your photos of inside the box there is a large plate on the underside – is that easy to remove?
