Above all, she was an ardent diarist, whose diaries encompassing 5 million words (!) and written partly in secret code are now under UNESCO protection for their contribution to documenting the era as well as Anne Lister's own sexual adventures. The diaries are still in the process of being decoded with an army of volunteers working towards fully deciphering them. This book is organized into chapters focusing on each woman Anne Lister had a relationship with. The author did not read and transcribe the journal entries quoted herself, unlike others on this list. The result is a somewhat narrow (and unfairly negative) framing of Anne Lister's character emphasizing salacious stories and containing some verifiably incorrect, non-factual information.
I hesitated between this book and the TV series tie-in, and now am not at all sure whether I should have chosen the latter instead. But I wanted more than the love story between Anne and Ann, because (although I loved the love story in the series) I was also intrigued by Lister's business dealings. Peter Davison as William Priestley, Ann Walker's cousin and one of the trustees of her entailed estate Besides, Sir T. H. was proved to be a perfect man by his having a child & it was infamous to be connected with both sexes – but that [there] were beings who were so unfortunate as to be not quite so perfect &, supposing they kept to one side [of] the question, was there no excuse for them.
