About this deal

One of my first 18 yo. Great smell : Chocolate, Toffee, a bit of coffee, caramalized apples . Really love this smell. I previously tasted the Glenlivet 12 Year Old and the no longer made 12 Year Old French Oak Finish (replaced by the 15 Year Old French Oak) and now this 18 Year Old, of which I had received a sample from my friend Niek. Professional maltsters soak rich Scottish barley in water for several days, allowing it to germinate. Once the shoots have appeared, the barley is heated and dried, at which point it becomes known as ‘malt’. And this continued satisfaction ensures that the single malt industry keeps growing and allows us snobs to keep enjoying the fruits of everyone else's labor. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

The Glenlivet 18 year old is a true masters product, well crafted and balanced. Bit low on ABV, but it's ok. Not too watery. And full of flavors: hints of sourness with orange geste, warm apples in the oven, pear and pie. Although all these components are considered to be warm, this whisky gives something fresh -almost like minty (mentol candy)… Hint of milk chocolate, hint of hidden leather. Leafy at the end. Lovely!Personally, I have no preference when it comes to which "camp" I visit, (blends vs single malt) I like what I like. And "I like" a few different whiskys - (all scotch). Some I favour exhibit considerable peat and/or smoke (Lagavulin 16 comes to mind)- and yet others I fancy tend to yield a more fruity experience, (such as this Glenlivet 18). Nose: Quite woody with an earthy sherry overtone. Salty almonds drizzled with cinnamon amid a basket of dark oranges. You can't help but like this nose. Aside from being different, I find that it isn’t as complex as the 12 and 15. The flavors are just more pleasant, thus easier to enjoy. After the cask flavors run out, though, there’s a sudden stop. If you were to ask me my ranking of the three, I’d say 15 > 18 > 12. Balance, Complexity: Good balance of sweet and sour. The apple does seem to dominate on the nose while the lemon seems to dominate in the mouth. However, the two seem to balance out. But complex? Not really.

Taste: The green apples have faded in the mouth, but they are still present. The palate gives place to a more complex mix of flavors than the unidimensional nose in my sense. Spices, nuts, chocolate and dried fruits are mixed in a nice balance. The colour of this is like a light gold, mixed with a bit of bronze, which looked beautiful in the old Glencairn glass! On the nose, it felt quite heavy and full, I want to describe it as smelling solid but it almost sounds wrong! Also got a woody aroma from it, along with a hint of pear, which is odd as I haven’t smelt a pear in years! To taste, this dram maintains the woody vibes, but seems calm and soft compared to the fullness of the smell. There is no harshness to it, there’s some kind of youth about it, which goes against the age statement on the bottle, not sure how else to describe that really! Finish: Oaky and short and round. No real fireworks to speak of; it just sort of falls flat and dull. There is apple there but that is about it. Once the dried malt is delivered to us at the distillery, we run it in batches through our traditional malt mill, which grinds it into a coarse flour called ‘grist’. The hard barley husks are split open to release the starch granules inside. MASHING Bought as a gift, but have this whisky at home. One of my absolute favourites and a noticable step up from the 12 year old. Staff extremely courteous to deal with and delivery exactly as stated.

The ex-sherry cask aged components blended here must be very minimal. I’m more inclined to think that a small portion of ex-sherry cask-matured Glenlivet was blended in this expression, rather than it being a finish. The distillery DNA and American oak flavors are more noticeable from start to end, while he ex-sherry notes like the dates, cherries and milk chocolate are sparingly present on the nose and finish. I concur with the general sentiment here. For me, it's by far the most outstanding Glenlivet offering in the sub 20 year old "regular" line up (I don't include the Nadurra in this equation - if I were to do that, it would trump the 18). For about twice the price, you can buy something considerably more mature and complex. It's a deeper, darker 'livet, but still not too heavy. George Smith is born in 1792 a small hillside farm in the parish of Glenlivet. He came from a long line of illicit distillers. As a young man his perseverance and determination were clear to see. However, as he stepped up to support his family. He was working as a joiner, building barns, mending fences and doing odd jobs on neighbouring farms.

Obviously a popular classic which has been reviewed numerous times so I'll try and add what I can. It is a very very smooth whisky. I get strong notes of fennel and aniseed - both on the nose and palate. Quite full bodied and rich, this actually reminds me more of a good blended malt in that it goes for silky smoothness rather than intriguing complexity, (think Johnnie Walker Gold or Chivas Regal 18yo). On the nose: Tropical fruits in the first half. Earthy in the second half. Initially, this is similar to the 12-year-old. There are medium intense aromas of pineapple, dried apricot, sapodilla, and starfruit. After these come light aromas of Fuji apples, honey and coconut sugar syrup. The intensity turns up a bit. It allows me to smell honeydew, orange jam and orange peel. Subtle aromas of French oak characteristics come out. An assortment of mushrooms like dried shiitake and grounded chaga comes to mind. Then the apple Helene reports again and a hint of apple wine. Very round and creamy. Then reinforced with a little bit of pepper for a slightly tingling sensation. The mouth is finished with orange peel, some oak (not bitter) and a hint of salt and honey. Well done. Hi Greg, thanks for the kind words. I havent had the Fiddich 18 in a while. But I can recall liking the 15 over the other 2. I guess I can only partially agree with what you said. It's got the smooth, inoffensive every-man qualities that makes the brand so popular, but with the wonderful mature complexity that comes with age. However, I may not buy this one again, at least not for a while. Where I live it is literally double the price of the 12. The 12 is certainly not as good. But is it worth paying double for? Don't get me wrong, it truly is considerably better than the twelve. I've yet to see how the 15 year old French oak measures up, but I digress...
