About this deal

The 1971 film also took liberties with the truth – Evans’s foul temper was brushed aside and Christie had no forged medical certificates on his wall and there is no evidence he ever performed abortions.

Per the Watford Observer, Christie later enlisted in the British Army during the First World War, where he joined the 52nd Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment as an infantryman in 1918. Simpson, Keith (1978). Forty Years of Murder: An Autobiography. London: Harrap. ISBN 978-0-245-53198-9. The evidence of builders working at Rillington Place was ignored, [60] and their interviews with Evans suggest that the police concocted a false confession. [61] It should have been clear from the first statement made by Evans on 30 November 1949 that he was ignorant of the resting place of the body of his wife or how she had been killed. He claimed that his wife's body was in either a manhole or a drain at the front of the house, [62] but a police search failed to find remains there. That should have prompted a thorough search of the residence, wash-house and garden, but no further action was taken until later, when the two bodies were found in the wash-house. Evans was also unaware at his first interview that his daughter had been killed. It is, of course, an established fact that Christie was a serial killer and this new account reinforces the belief that he was, far from being ignorant of it all, a party to dealing with the aftermath of Evans’s deeds which would have left him open to charges as an accessory under the Accessories and Abettors Act 1861, still fully in force at that time. Penalties for such offences could be as severe as those imposed upon the principal offender. However, this is of course merely academic given Christie’s subsequent fate for his own crimes little more than three years later. Kennedy, Ludovic (1961). Ten Rillington Place. London, England: Victor Gollancz Ltd. pp.23–24. ISBN 978-0685032640. He is also thought to have been responsible for the murders of his fellow tenant Beryl Evans and her baby daughter Geraldine – murders which were originally blamed on Beryl’s husband Timothy. All were gassed, raped and strangled and hidden in the kitchen in an alcove covered over by wallpaper.

Christie carried on with his own life, getting a job as a clerk and taking on new tenants at 10 Rillington Place. On June 22, 1953, Christie was put on trial in the same court Timothy Evans had been tried in just three years ago. During the course of the trial, he confessed that he had murdered Beryl Evans. Peter: Yes, Christie did claim to have murdered Beryl. His belief was ‘the more the merrier’ on the grounds that he would put forward a plea of insanity. That way, he would escape the death penalty. Needless to say, that wasn’t accepted and he was regarded as fit to stand trial for the murder of Ethel, his wife. He was hanged for that crime. It stars Tim Roth, who stars as Christie, and Samantha Morton, who stars as his wife Ethel. The show is focusing on two of Christie’s victims, Beryl Evans and her one-year-old Geraldine. Peter: I remember every detail about the house, 10 Rillington Place. It is firmly ingrained in my memory. After Christie’s crimes came to light, I knew exactly where each body had been placed. Those memories will never go away.

How John Christie Became The Monster Of Rillington Place

Apart from the gruesome, horrific and intrusive photograph of Beryl Evans on For the murders of his final three victims, Christie modified the gassing technique he had first used on Eady; he used a rubber tube connected to the gas pipe in the kitchen which he kept closed off with a bulldog clip. [83] He seated his victims in the kitchen, released the clip on the tube, and let gas leak into the room. The Brabin Report pointed out that Christie's explanation of his gassing technique was not satisfactory because he would have been overpowered by the gas as well. It was established that all three victims had been exposed to carbon monoxide. [84] The gas made his victims drowsy, after which Christie strangled them with a length of rope. [83]
