There are a couple of reasons for this. First off, the mission walkthroughs are extremely hand-holdy, so much so that the missions instruct players what to do with each figure in each turn. There’s not much room for on-the-spot learning or interpretation. Whilst this is great for hammering home key info about certain mechanics, things are a little bit rigid, and the “playing” one does doesn’t really seem like playing. You expect the training wheels to be bolted on pretty tight, but you were expecting dad to let go of the handlebars. Learning to play Kill Team is a doddle with the help of three video tutorials that’ll teach you the ins and outs of the ultimate sci-fi skirmish game.

But, for my part, as a Kill Team newbie, I found it refreshing to have everything required for a proper, furnished battle board right there in the starter box – as opposed to getting a boatload of brand new minis, only to have todo battle across bare, arid dining-room table, with only teapots and pepper grinders for cover. Getting a knife in the ribs is just as lethal as it sounds, and only your own skills as a duelist will protect you when a very angry Ork charges in for the kill – which is every bit as cool to play out on the tabletop as you’d expect. Making matters worse, while colorful and highly detailed, the double-sided game board in our set is warped and won’t lay flat on the table. That presents a huge problem considering that all the pieces in play — including the bits of terrain — are feather-light plastic. Just touching the board with the tip of a finger can tip things over or move them around. For a game of precise measurements and carefully determined line of sight like Kill Team, that’s unacceptable. The rulebook in the Starter is the “compact” version, it doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles (like cards and dice), and the terrain set is essentially just the scatter terrain and not the full-on Orky encampment. This starter set is likely going to be cheaper than the Octarius box by a wide margin as well. The Starter will be a cheaper way to get into the game and will also be a cheaper way of getting all the components vs purchasing them individually. And yes, the Kommados and Death Korps are getting new boxed sets, too!As per the rules, we began by rolling for the initiative. Necrons rolled higher, so they went first. There are some moments of clarity and brilliance – Shoot and Fight, for example – but a concerningly large portion of the book will leave a lot of newcomers to the game with more questions than answers. Whilst it’s not a flat-out useless resource by any stretch of the imagination, it’s definitely not the most beginner-friendly guidebook that GW have ever produced.

In general, once theKommandos get up in the Guardsmen’s faces, things swing in the Greenskins’ favour – and, when that happens, the gleeful melee mayhem thesefellascan wreak will have them melting the heart of even inveterate Emperor-lovers like me.
