Arles was of considerable significance in the province of Gallia Narbonensis. It covered an area of some 40 ha (100 acres) and possessed a number of monuments including an amphitheatre, triumphal arch, Roman circus, theatre and a full ring of ramparts. Ancient Arles was a lot closer to the sea than it is today, and served as a major port. It had, and still has, the southern-most bridge on the Rhône, and unusually the Roman bridge was not fixed but consisted of a pontoon-style bridge held together by boats, with towers and drawbridges at each end. This unconventional design was in direct response to the river’s frequent violent floods, which would have made short work of a fixed crossing. The River Severn is the longest river in the UK. The extensive castle ruins are fantastic to explore. My son came along with me for the afternoon, and loved the wall walks and vast cellar which is used as a concert venue. He’s a budding numismatist (coin and note collector) and was fascinated by the Castle Museum, particularly a one billion mark note from the galloping inflation period of the Weimar Republic in the 1920s.
