Adeftly crafted and expertly paced thriller that will keep readers guessing (and terrified) until the very end.”

Someone We Know by Shari Lapena | Waterstones

In Someone We Know, Raleigh, a teenage boy, is the person of interest in a series of home break-ins. What was your inspiration for the book, and how does it compare to your previous thrillers? Releasing her first book in 2007 Shari Lapena made her début onto the literary scene with her novel ‘Things Go Flying’. It was a stand-alone title with shades of David Sedaris and Douglas Copeland in it, as it brought their wit and warmth to the forefront of the narrative. With a creative approach to the genre, it manages to take a flight of fantasy that was equally grounded in its sense of character and personality. The mystery itself plays out like a whodunit, with plenty of suspects among a small pool of characters, and red herrings galore. Each character has secrets they want to keep hidden, and as those are revealed one by one, the twists and turns make for a truly entertaining read.No-one does suburban paranoia like Shari Lapena —this slowly unfurling nightmare will have you biting your nails until the end.” I've been banging through police procedurals lately and neglecting my physical books (as per usual), so I decided to "challenge" myself to attempt to read five popcorn thrillers before 2022 comes to an end. The five books: What a neighbourhood! Seemingly quiet and middle-class on the surface but behind closed doors, there are affairs, secrets, a teenage boy breaking into their houses and a missing woman later found murdered. Lapena keeps us guessing as the murder suspects pile up and the police keep changing their focus. Some of the characters are not very likeable and some seem pleasant enough but are hiding unpleasant secrets. An engaging, suspenseful read with enough twists to keep the waters muddy until the murderer finally reveals themselves. Someone We Know is a new domestic suspense thriller from New York Times bestselling author Shari Lapena, where a murder shakes a quiet NY community that might have some dark secrets among neighbors. And Richard Pierce worries about what the intruder might have seen in his house....like the burner phone he hid.

I honestly did not get the ending of this — Someone We I honestly did not get the ending of this — Someone We

Released on the 15th of August in 2017, this title was published through the ‘Doubleday Canada’ publishing label. Setting up her fourth title it works as a suspense filled thriller that aims to keep the readers on the edges of their seats. Much like her previous title, ‘The Couple Next Door’, which was also a thriller, this seeks to create a compelling narrative that engages and hooks its audience. Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets? This is a first by this author for me and I was amazed by how many twists were in this book I never guessed the outcome.

Someone We Know is a tour de force of thriller writing. Shari Lapena proves yet again that she is the mistress of the pacy plot, cliff edge tension and menacing suburban claustrophobia. Fans will be delighted and if you haven’t read her books yet, then why on earth not?” You have become my favorite author. I’ve read 4 of your books in the past three weeks! Keep up the good work. Reply Attending a number of events as well, she is also very well known as a spokesperson for her craft as well. Conducting readings of her work she reaches a whole variety of different audiences and readers with her material. This also allows her to express herself and her writing, giving it a unique voice, seeing people respond to it in the process. I love reading Shari’s books. I introduced her to my grandmother. Now, my grandmother and I read them together. She is in Pennsylvania and I’m in Alabama. Reply

I think I loved Raleigh, I know what he did was wrong but at least he was brave enough to endure the consequences. And Olivia might be the most decent character. Even if it’s silly move to make her son write apologizing letters and put them in the P.O boxes of the victims were fair and honest actions. It was inspired by something I saw on the internet about a kid breaking into someone’s house in the middle of the night to use their wi-fi. I guess he’d had his own wi-fi restricted at home. It got me thinking about what a teenage boy might do, and what the repercussions might be. I knew the boy had to stumble onto something big—I needed a murder. It’s always easy to come up with a dead body—it’s how that dead body got to be there that’s more difficult, and a lot more interesting. That’s where the story comes in. In many ways, Someone We Know is similar to my other thrillers—it’s fast paced, it’s twisty, and you want to get to the bottom of it all. But this one also focuses on whole families, on parents and sons in particular, rather than focusing only on couples. It feels richer and deeper to me in that way. THERE ARE TOO MANY LIES, SECRETS, CHEATERS ON THIS BOOK! NOBODY IS INNOCENT: Every character lies on this book. Every character has big secrets. Every one of them has different agenda. I was about to blurt out laughing because at some parts the book turned into mysterious tele-novelas, most soap-y operas, you know that ones, the man who sleeps with his own maid, daughter in law at the same time, when his wife’s having a relationship with gardener and her trainer  In this neighbourhood, it's not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide. Lapena keeps the well-developed twists churning, with each a surprise notch in this ever-evolving plot, and she continues this skillful storytelling until the stunning twist at the end . . . memorable.”The Canadian author Shari Lapena has been writing for some time now, having brought out a number of thrillers under her name. With a clear gift for suspense and being able to keep her readers on the edges of their seats, she’s been able to craft her own unique niche within the industry. Understanding her genre and her audience, she is one of the most prolific authors working within her particular field to this day. When the mystery is finally resolved and it all makes sense, you will still be asking yourself questions about how far people are willing to go to cover a crime committed by somebody they love. Each character seemed like a potential suspect at various points throughout the story. I'd like to say I figured out the ending pretty early on but NOPE! I never actually figured it out until it was explained in detail at the end the book.

As I mentioned before these neighborhood dramas usually provide a good amount of entertainment. The things people are up to behind closed doors! The police certainly had their work cut out for them as there were quite a few murder suspects and as you are reading it's difficult to really eliminate anyone from the list. Now if you are looking for a story with likable people, keep searching as this is not the book for you. To be quite honest I don't think there was a single person I liked but that sure didn't stop me from being interested in their dirty laundry! Well done, Ms Lapena! This was such a finely crafted thriller that I literally could not put down! This would make a perfect beach read! Highly recommend! Now Amanda's handsome husband Richard Pierce has reported her missing. Amanda was supposed to have gone on a girls' weekend with her friend Caroline, but she never returned. And a call to Caroline revealed that no trip was planned. The action is set in the fictional town of Aylesford, located in New York State’s Hudson Valley. It is a picturesque and haunting part of the Empire State, nestled within the Catskill Mountains a little more than an hour outside of NYC. Jumping ahead to present day, a man named Robert Pierce is phoning the police because his wife, Amanda, has not returned from a weekend away with one of her girlfriends. The problem is that the girlfriend, Caroline Lu, said she never went anywhere with Amanda and knew nothing about her weekend getaway. This book had me on the edge of my seat, finishing it this morning around 3am. I highly recommend this book, it is my favorite so far from Shari, can wait to see whats next. This novel is fast-paced (as they all are)...she grabs you right from the first chapter and takes you on one spectacular thriller ride... Fabulous TWISTS......I never guess how her books end!
