Being a reader and supporter/fan of bookshops I thought I must read this. I was not sure what to expect, it is a blend of stories of people who visit Shaw’s wee bookshop in New Zealand and a memoir. She certainly has not sat in that bookshop her whole life, rather she documents her adventurous running away from her past and trauma. I fell in love with them from the very first chapter and knew immediately that this book would crush my soul. Eric and Andrew are staying in a remote cabin on a New Hampshire lake with their seven-year-old child, Wen, who is catching grasshoppers in the garden when a large man appears. He is friendly at first and is starting to win Wen over when he abruptly says, "None of what is going to happen is your fault." Three more strangers then appear in the driveway holding deadly weapons... Nursing unbearable grief for the sons she had lost, Shaw attempted suicide, and spent time in a Melbourne psychiatric hospital. And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely of places.
