About this deal

The reason there is an emphasis on lawn moss is due to the issues it can cause your longer term lawn health. Do not ignore it, and ensure you keep on-top of it. Feeding The lawn should be prepared by scarification and aeration. Scarification removes the excess thatch which sits at the surface of the soil and aeration helps to alleviate any compaction in the soil under the lawn. Scarifying and aerating the lawn helps to ensure the top dressing can be worked deep into the sward. With Autumn very much in full swing, it is a great time to really consider how you can keep your lawn healthy during this time of year. As this tends to be slightly cooler and damper, as well as a variety of other changes occurring around us, understanding some basic tips could really make all the difference.

An autumn feed is a great way in which to supply your lawn with the nutrients it needs to strengthen itself for the winter season. Before feeding your lawn or using specific treatments, it is always beneficial to speak with a lawn care specialist, as they will be able to offer more advice on what is going to be the best solution. Clear The Lawn Of Debris & Leaves Top dressing is applied to lawns to level out any minor imperfections on the surface of a lawn and it helps to create an ideal environment for new grass seeds to germinate. Avoid spreading when turning around – turn off the flow lever to pause momentarily. This prevents you from spreading large amounts of material in patches at the edges of your lawn. The UK Lawn Care Association recommend regular scarification is carried out to your lawn to prevent excessive thatch build-up. This is because lawns with excessive thatch will not respond well to regular lawn treatments. They will also be difficult to mow and maintain for the home owner. Your grass type, soil conditions and local environment will determine how often scarification is required, but many lawns benefit from scarifying once every two or three years whereas lawns which are more prone to the build-up of thatch may need it every year. At times, thatch forms densely enough to absorb rainwater, making your lawn very uncomfortable to walk on each time it rains.

Despite the affordable price, the spreading width is quite good, at 45cm. And as a drop type spreader, this option offers great precision, allowing for accurate application of whatever you may be spreading. You can apply fertiliser, salt, or seed evenly across your lawn with Scotts’ spreader. What’s more, granule size isn’t an issue, since you can simply open the gap wider in case you’re using bigger pellets. This stage does require a lot of care & attention – the aim of top dressing is to improve (even out) the surface of the lawn so you need to make sure you’re creating that. If you have thin or bare areas of lawn, have scarified or just fancy adding newer grass varieties, then over seeding the lawn will be part of the operation. You should add the new grass seed after renovation and either before or after top dressing. If you have a lot of top dressing to work into the lawn perhaps seeding afterwards is best so that the seed doesn’t get moved around as you rub and level the dressing. On the other hand, if you are only top dressing lightly you could add the lawn seed first so that the dressing goes on top thereby insulating the seed somewhat from birds and rain. Top dressing in conjunction with other lawn care maintenance procedures is not only highly beneficial, but can often save time. So, if you are planning to aerate or scarify your lawn do so prior to top dressing. As always timing is critical so only do this when growth conditions are good. Planning & Preparation for Top Dressing

When it comes to topdressing putting greens and other smaller areas, you want a topdressing tool that makes the process work seamlessly. Another good thing about this spreader is the variable settings for the speed. You can define exactly how much to release as you walk, thanks to these adjustable settings. The price is quite good as well.

There is a slight downside to this automated design though – it’s slightly less precise. Although you can control the spreading rate with the trigger on the handle, you can be more precise when rotating a handle. The main difference is a drop spreader is typically much more precise. They release fertiliser much more slowly, because they use a simple release mechanism rather than a rotating disc. Top dressing is my preferred method of improving my lawn, and I generally do it once every other year after aerating my turf and overseeding my lawn.

If you choose to top-dress your lawn manually, firstly, load your wheelbarrow with the chosen top dressing mix. Using a heavy duty scarifier with solid tine blades, set the depth of the scarifier so that it brings up a decent amount of thatch without choking or stalling the machine. Proceed to scarify the entire lawn. Once complete, rake up or mow to collect the arisings, this will take considerable time due to the density of the thatch. It provides a smooth playing surface — As you know, golfers want an even playing surface throughout the greens to improve their game. Topdressing with aeration improves the turf’s playing surface.Nicole Forsyth is a passionate Instructor of Plant Science at an agricultural vocational high school, and a certified landscape design professional, certified horticulturist, and certified arborist in Massachusetts.

Ecolawn Compost Spreaders are designed to make topdressing your lawn a hassle-free experience. Quantity of Top Dressing Soil

If you prefer the precision of a manual hand spreader, this is probably the best hand spreader you can buy. One tip I have if you don’t have a wheelbarrow yet is that you should try to buy one with a solid wheel. However, they can be raked up if you don’t want these to be trodden into the surface, paths or patios.
