With just the right content, the 55QA5D63DB can deliver some pretty engaging pictures. Unfortunately, though, most of the time its picture quality varies between disappointing and flat-out poor. There’s no local dimming system to deliver local light controls, but this isn’t surprising at all at the 55QA5D63DB’s price point.
The speakers even have the dynamic range and power to keep on growing in step with an escalating action scene – something many TVs costing way more fail to do – and the sound consistently has direct impact, rather than sounding as if it’s all getting swallowed up somewhere behind the screen. The Toshiba UF3D has a built-in speaker system that delivers clear and crisp sound. The speakers are located at the bottom of the television, which ensures that the sound is directed toward the viewer. However, for those who want an even more immersive audio experience, the television has a digital optical output that can connect to a soundbar or other external speaker system. Smart Features The Toshiba UF3D features HDR technology, which provides a wider range of colors and increased contrast, resulting in more lifelike images. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and is a technology that allows for a higher level of brightness and contrast. This technology is ideal for those who enjoy watching movies and TV shows with vibrant colors and rich details. OLED TechnologyWe’re not talking about brightness levels to rival those of any current premium TVs, of course, be they OLED or LCD. There are numerous mid-range and even lower-mid LCD models out there that can go brighter still, too. But by budget standards, the 50UK4D63DB produces comfortably more light with both full-screen bright HDR images and small HDR highlights than expected. The highlighting holds up even within already bright shots too, adding up to a more consistent and convincing HDR experience than you’d normally ever see at this price point. The television also has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, which makes it easy to access streaming services and other online content. It also has Bluetooth connectivity, which allows users to connect to external speakers or headphones. Compatibility Universal remote: A universal remote can control multiple devices, including your television, cable box, and streaming devices, providing a more convenient viewing experience. Of course, there are some downsides to OLED technology - they're somewhat susceptible to screen burn, with images lingering on the screen if they're left on standby for too long. Is a QLED TV worth it? Unexpectedly, the TV is actually detected by the Xbox Series X as supporting VRR (though only up to 60Hz, obviously). However, running VRR into the TV actually causes more screen tearing rather than reducing it as you’d expect. So much so, in fact, that it’s best not to think that the 50UK4D63DB supports VRR at all. All new sets across all four ranges are set to feature the TikTok TV app built-in, allowing you to watch content from your 'For You' and 'Following' feeds on the big screen.The One Connect Box is a feature available on some Samsung televisions. This box connects to the tv and houses all of the connections, including HDMI and USB ports. This feature allows for a cleaner and more organized setup, as all cables can be hidden away in the box. This feature is ideal for those who want a neat and tidy home entertainment setup. Accessories The main source of both its strengths and flaws is its brightness. Right out of the gate, you can tell that it’s much brighter than its cheaper 50UK4D63B sibling. This enables it to deliver much more of the brightness, both in small ‘peaks’ and full-screen situations, that high dynamic range content thrives on. Calibration is important for ensuring that the picture and sound settings are optimized for the viewing environment. The Toshiba UF3D has a range of calibration options, including color calibration and gamma calibration. Users can also adjust the white balance and color temperature to ensure the colors are accurate and consistent. Additionally, the television has a built-in calibration tool that can be accessed through the settings menu. Software Updates Potentially undermining these hopes, though, is the 55QA5D63DB’s use of an IPS type of LCD panel rather than a VA one. This means, based on past experience, that it may remain enjoyable to watch from a wider viewing angle than VA rivals, but will likely struggle to deliver serious contrast. When it comes to supported content, the young at heart will be happy to find Twitch and TikTok apps on the 50UK4D63DB’s app list, and those six direct app access buttons on the remote are welcome shortcuts. It’s a real shame, though, that Toshiba has not yet been able to persuade Disney+ or Apple TV to join the 50UK4D63DB’s cause.
There are, to be fair, one or two more picture areas where the 55QA5D63DB does pretty well. Its native 4K pictures are crisp and sharp (a touch too much in its Vivid and Standard picture presets, perhaps), and the sharpness doesn’t break down badly when there’s motion in the frame. Nor is there any of the overt smearing or excessive judder we still often see on budget TVs, even with 24p movie sources. The 50UK4D63DB also follows its 50UK3163DB predecessor in achieving a genuine 4K feeling with the sharpness and detail density of its pictures. It maintains that clarity better than most when there’s motion in the frame, too, and while it’s naturally at its best with native 4K, it upscales HD very credibly and naturally for such an affordable TV too. When it comes to OLED vs QLED, there are a lot of discussions over which is better, with both having their advantages and disadvantages. QLED TVs have many perks, such as the fact that they have incredible brightness levels and Quantum Dot technology. QLED is a TV technology that gives you vibrant and lifelike colours, making your viewing experience more enjoyable. It uses tiny particles called quantum dots to produce highly accurate and vibrant colours. QLED TVs have good brightness and contrast, so you get a clear picture even in bright rooms. If you want vivid visuals and a great viewing experience, this is the tech for you.
