Fran: So Archimedes was working on a problem that had been set by the king because the king didn’t know whether his crown was made of pure gold or not. Many languages use a word meaning 'kisses'as a form of leave-taking convention, and 'filia' [filiaː]is exactly that in Greek. Contrary to what you may assume, it generally does not imply intimacy, even though you would obviously only say 'filia' to someone you know pretty well, be it at parting or before hanging up the phone. The 'cuter' version is 'filakia' (literally 'little kisses') which you'll more often than not here younger women saying. Pretty straight forward, but caution! Make sure you don't mix up the Greek word for 'kisses' with that for 'friendship' [filiːa]. That wouldn't make any sense as a parting expression. At all. The IFC is a national organisation that brings together many fraternities on the same university campus to create a more diverse Greek community; various fraternities have come together for this purpose. The Pindus mountain range on the mainland contains one of the world’s deepest gorges – Vikos Gorge. At its deepest parts, the walls of this cool canyon plunge a breathtaking 1,100m! Mount Olympus is Greece’s highest mountain, standing a huge 2,917m above sea level. The Ancient Greeks believed this magnificent mountain was where the gods lived! Greece’s great nature! The waters off the Greek coastline are full of beautiful sea life Perhaps the most important lesson of this book is to develop good habits. Mastery of Greek, as with any other language, requires daily immersion. They instruct on how to develop good study habits, how to memorize using good methods and how to retain what you've learned. I recommend this to students like myself who are struggling to develop those good language habits. The biggest challenge, if I'm honest, is choosing to believe that I need Greek (or Hebrew for that matter) to be a habitual part of my life. I like to think I can study it whenever I'm asked to or whenever I feel like it, and that I'll retain the skill I've attained with it. That is a fool's game, and I like many others need to devote myself if I'm to retain all that I've learned and then use it for the benefit of God's church.

I reccomend this book to all who thirst for the words of God and wish to meet them face-to-face rather than via "kissing the bride through a veil," as I read recently; and especially for those few Orthodox Christians who love Koine Greek. The Church in modern times has placed such an emphasis on the vernacular. At the same time instead of translating from the Orthodox Greek New Testament into the speech of the people, we've been using Protestant English translations. Translated from the non-Orthodox critical text(s) of the Greek New Testament and Jewish Old Testament (the Orthodox Old Testament, for all Orthodox, is the Greek LXX, not the Jewish religion's Hebrew text), these are inappropriate for Orthodox Christians. This is the Word mentioned in John 1:1-4, 14, who was with God and was God in eternity before creation, who became flesh in time, and in whom is life. This Word is the divine person of Christ as an account, a definition, and an expression of all that God is. In Him is life, and He is life (John 11:25; 14:6). The phrase the Word of life in Greek indicates that the Word is life. The person is the divine life, the eternal life, which we can touch. The mentioning of the Word here indicates that this Epistle is a continuation and development of John’s Gospel (cf. John 1:1-2, 14).”If we know that God’s desire is altogether related to our having and living out His divine, eternal, zoe life, we won’t waste time by focusing on our bios or our psuche, looking for spiritual progress there. We won’t be disappointed when we can’t seem to fix or improve ourselves. We’ll remember that Christ came that we may have zoe abundantly, so we’ll focus on that eternal, zoe life in our spirit. We’ll feed and nourish this zoe life by eating and drinking Christ in His Word, spending time with Him in prayer, and experiencing Him day by day as our life. As we daily care for this life within us, the eternal life will increase and grow within us, expressing more and more of God in our living here on earth. As you can probably guess, ‘yia mas’ [jaː mas]is also a wish for good health, but this time our own. Unlike ‘yia sou’, ‘yia mas’ isn’t a greeting, but the standard toast we Greeks make before sipping down that glass of alcohol in our hand. So if you’re planning on exploring the world-famous Athens nightlife, this is a phrase you’ll most likely hear a lot. If someone raises a glass to you saying ‘yia mas’, return the toast simply by repeating it yourself. Pretty easy, right? The sun has, for centuries, been a powerful symbol of magic and divinity. Due to its power, honey was used as an offering instead of wine because the ancient Greeks believed that it was dangerous for the universe to allow this powerful deity to get drunk and tipsy.

Dom: This is finally it… or is it? That boat’s absolutely fine. A failed experiment. No bangs, flashes, whooshes. Possibly the most essential Greek phrase, and one of the most common Greek greetings, ‘yia sou’ [jaːsu]is an informal way of saying ‘hello’. What your Greek phrasebook probably won’t tell you though, is that ‘yia’ is a shortening for ‘iyia’[ijiːa], which means ‘health’ in Greek - i.e. you greet people by literally wishing them good health (isn't that the sweetest?). The slightly more polite version is ‘yia sas’ [jaːsas], which you probably want to use with strangers, older people, etc. Events at the Greek’s Olympics included wrestling, boxing, long jump, javelin, discus and chariot racing. But those taking part in the wrestling event had to be the toughest, as there were hardly any rules – and they had to compete naked. Eek!

Greek life is an excellent method to make friends early in your college career. Greek groups attract students from a wide range of origins, towns, and majors. This diversity can be used to connect with and learn about students who are not like you. Furthermore, fraternity and sorority chapters frequently hold seasonal fundraisers and formal gatherings. These chapter events provide additional opportunities to network and socialise with other students on campus. What God wants is that we human beings would take in His eternal life. By our taking in His life, He becomes our real life and we can express Him through our living. The tree of life being mentioned in the first and last books of the Bible helps us see that life, the zoe life, is a central theme in the Bible.

I loved this book. I could hardly put it down. The blend of encouragement, exhortation, and examples of others who have made Greek a priority was pitched perfect for me. The research they drew on about habits as well as the resources they recommended energized and excited me. I'm so glad I read it. Closely related to peratzatha, ‘aragma’ [aːraɣma] is a slang word also relating to the small joys of life, and specifically refers to the all-time favourite activity of ‘ chilling’. For Greeks ‘aragma’ obviously takes place in houses with friends, but also in coffee places (if you’ve been to Greece before, we’re sure you’ve noticed how many hours and hours on end their version of ‘going for coffee’ takes). In the summer, the home of aragma naturally becomes the beach, which is why it meant so much for us putting together that guide to the best Athens beaches you read about recently. By the way, the verb form of aragma is ‘ arazo’ - just in case someone calls you up while you’re there and asks what you’re up to. This table gives Attic inflectional endings. For declension in other dialects, see Appendix:Ancient Greek dialectal declension. Now that we have answered the question of what Greek life isis Greek life, it is now time to focus on the advantages and disadvantages of joining a fraternity or sorority. After looking at what is Greek life on campus, let us see whether you should or shouldn’t join one!

Kinds of Greek Life

OK, we didn’t copy everything. But let’s give them a bit of credit anyway. First off the Greeks gave the world democracy – which we still use in Britain today to choose who runs the country. This indicates that life is a synonym for Word of life in the preceding verse. Both denote the divine person of Christ, who was with the Father in eternity and was manifested in time through incarnation, and whom the apostles saw and testified and reported to the believers.” It covers a lot of the basics of how to memorize. Use creative and imaginary word associations, etc. I am a bit surprised it sort of recommended the use of an inter linear. I find myself in deeper agreement with Keep Your Greek: burn your inter linear.
