About this deal

The main character of Sean Barker is played very close to his manga counterpart "Sho Fukamachi" with only some Slight differences in his name, age and more realistic and mature approach in dealing with the responsibilities that come with possessing the violent power of the Guyver unit. Sean discovers that the Guyver seems to bring out the most violent side of him which leads to a tendency for uncontrolled, indiscriminate killing. That and his constant obsession with taking down the Chronos organization (which was thought to have been destroyed in the first Guyver movie, but Sean believes otherwise)has left Sean Barker without any friends, all alone in the world. He is afraid to get close to anyone since he is still a target for Chronos and he fears he may accidentally hurt those he cares about should the Guyver's violent side manifest. The second difference is that unlike Sho, who seems to fine with the violent tendencies and highly destructive powers of the Guyver, Sean Barker chooses to use the Guyver merely to augment his own fighting skills, only giving in to his savage violent side and using more destructive force when absolutely necessary. He is given ample character development in this movie and ends up coming across as a very likable character in the end. David Hayter turns in a strong performance as the main protagonist and masterfully portrays the part of a reluctant individual cursed with an alien power that he would rather have not have.

Admittedly, I bought this movie on the basis that it starred David Hayter. As a fan of him as Solid Snake, and his writing on the X-Men movies, I couldn't help but get it. It's true he's a better voice actor than actor, but I still enjoyed the movie. The Guyver: Dark Hero, partially continues what was finished in the first movie. Sean Barker starts become haunted by the "guyver" armor as he also starts to lose the ability to control it. Pushing himself away from family and friends, he leaves his home to find answers to his problems. Screenplay writer, Nathan Long, left out the last two characters left on screen at the end of the first movie and for good reason too. They didn't help excel the first one anyway. Long also remembered to include Barker's girlfriend, Mizky, for a little while too. And although the casting is different for all the characters, there is still a lot of appeal to them. Many Zoanoids resemble existing animals to some extent, usually mammals, birds, reptiles or arthropods. Others, however, appear bizarre and outlandish, with no relation to any known living thing. R-Rated Opening: Dark Hero, makes it clear within minutes that it earns its R rating, with some strong language, talk of cocaine smuggling, and two bloody deaths.

Hyper-Zoanoids physically stand apart from normal Zoanoids in that they have unique abilities, usually at least two separate 'power sets'. The most powerful Hyper-Zoanoids can be considered to be a match for the Guyver. Recently, more advanced Hyper-Zoanoids have appeared, that have been modified specifically to fight a Guyver, possessing qualities that negate several of its weapons (eg, reactive armor that can stop a vibro-blade and resist the vibrations of the sonic buster).

At the camp, Atkins and his commandos prevent Crane from executing the archaeological team and safely evacuate them. However, Atkins is captured and his commandos are brutally murdered by one of the escaping Zoanoids. An intimate scene between Lisker and Weber in the van as they wait for Striker & Ramsey. He mentions the two of them going shopping in Brazil, and she absolutely loves the idea.

When zoanoid Lisker crushes zoanoid Segawa's head, blood is shown gushing onto the ground in the VHS version. The "director's cut" has a very slightly shorter version showing a shot of zoanoid Segawa on his knees with no blood. At first glance, it seems as George and Wang have done a good job on the Guyver costume. It has the same cool silhouette, broad shoulders and bony protrusions as the one in the comic, and the brief sequence where it takes over Sean’s body is quite impressive. While Yoshiki Takaya’s series was shot through with a streak of inner turmoil, melty violence and body horror, the 1991 American movie adaptation was more akin to the 1960s Batman TV series. It’s wildly camp – sometimes cringe-inducingly so – but also guiltily enjoyable. In the second film Sean becomes mentally tortured by his transformation into the Guyver, due of the fact that he's now brutally killing criminals on the streets, and doesn't know what to do with his power which also results in Mizky breaking up with him. He is drawn to an archaeological dig that turns out to be funded by Chronos. While there he falls in love with the leading lady of the film, Cori. He also meets another major character, Atkins, who works for the government, and Cori's father, Marcus. Later on, an alien ship is dug up. At the dig, Sean later learns that some of the people at the dig are Zoanoids who are being led by Crane, the main antagonist of the film. Cori's father also happens to be one. Later on everyone goes inside the ship, and Cori finds another Guyver Unit. Crane takes it planning to return it to Chronos HQ. Cori, overhearing of Crane's plan, is then took hostage by some of the Zoanoids and is about to be killed. Sean learning about this becomes the Guyver and saves Cori, slaughtering the two Zoanoids. Crane hearing that Guyver killed them, he instead equips the Unit to himself. Sean and Cori return to the dig planning to destroy the alien ship. Before thinking about destroying it, Sean goes inside the ship as the Guyver learning about the history of humanity and the purpose of the Guyver. While exiting the ship Cori and Atkins are held hostage by the Zoanoids. Cori's father comes in and frees them from their grasp. Cori then takes cover while Guyver, Atkins, and her father fight off the Zoanoids. Guyver and Atkins kill all the Zoanoids except for Crane who manages to kill Marcus. Crane then turns into the Guyver Zoanoid, who has a damaged control metal. Him and Guyver duke it out. Guyver starts losing against the Guyver Zoanoid, until Cori shoots the Guyver Zoanoid in the control metal causing his suit to malfuntion. Guyver then rips off the damaged control metal causing him to liquify. Guyver then proceeds to use his mega-smasher to end his misery. After the Guyver Zoanoid's defeat, Sean tells Cori that he lied and that the Guyver was the experiment. Guyver then makes the ship take off into space. They all get out of the dig. Atkins then asks Sean to help him and the government launch an underground war against Chronos. Sean refuses and drives away happily with Cori, ending the film.I am surprised a sequel was even made after the failure of the cinema release for the first Guyver movie, but I'm glad they did. This would had been perfect if it had the budget of the first movie but still had the story of the second. This is great for teens and manga guyver fans but there is still allot of room for improvments.

When people talk about great films of low-budget filmmaking like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead or John Carpenter's Halloween or James Cameron's The Terminator, Steve Wang's Guyver: Dark Hero should also be mentioned!!! As he struggles to find the purpose of the thing living inside him he is drawn to the caves of Utah where he will dicier the Guyver's true purpose. Although the acting is very hammy at times(What do you expect for a sci-fi b-movie) I recommend that people wanting to find out about The Guyver best watch the original anime show then view this live action version before viewing the first movie. The Guyver was produced by Brian Yuzna, who was behind such fleshy classics as Re-Animator and From Beyond, and sat in a director’s chair for the fantastically grim satire, Society (1989), as well as other, lesser movies including Progeny (1998), The Dentist (1996) and cyborg dog movie Rottweiler (2004). The Guyver is loosely based on Yoshiki Takaya's 1985 manga series Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. Before the film, the manga was adapted twice. It became an OVA in 1986 and a 12-episode series in 1989. There's also a 26-episode series that came out in 2005. Like the film, the manga follows a teenager who stumbles upon a miraculous alien device and uses its power to battle a corrupt corporation. The manga follows a monster of the week format, in which Chronos (spelled "Cronos" in the manga) sends increasingly deadly alien warriors to defeat The Guyver. The scene where Balcus makes Lisker punch himself has music in the theatrical cut. In the VHS version, no music is present. There is some over the top violence. But its not disturbing. And its a short film. As a matter of fact, i miss action films like this. In my opinion, this film has better "fantasy- kung fu" fights than the Matrix.
