It hurts giving any book two stars, especially where its author evidently has a genuine interest in the subject matter and has, undeniably, done the "spade work" in terms of research. There are three main problems: the book has a strange and haphazard structure; any commentary gets drowned by the sheer volume of newspaper references (barely one sentence can be completed without a direct quote from a 1900s Birmingham news report) and, inexcusably, it is strewn with spelling and grammatical errors.
