About this deal

The card is located in the bus ID 04, with the device number 00. Additionally, the two functions of the two interfaces have IDs 0 and 1, respectively. If you saw the accompanying video, you may have insight into my tension with this unit. It is absolutely awesome in terms of capabilities, but there is a catch. The unit may be an awesome firewall unit, but that feels like it will underutilize the hardware for many applications. That is why we started testing so many OSes. The limitation of the eMMC installations means that our storage is necessarily limited. Once we realized the model of being able to use 10GbE NICs for storage, that started to make more sense, just not for VMware given the company’s archaic hardware compatibility model. Reboot OPNsense and you should now see the 10G interfaces to assign! When I saw how easy it was enable the 10G interfaces, I was very happy because I have been wanting to test this system for quite a while. Performance The real show here is the network port side. On top, there is a 12V DC input, a USB 3 Type-A port, and then lots of networking. The three RJ45 ports are 2.5GbE ports powered by Intel i225 NICs. GoWin R86s 12V In USB 3x 2.5GbE 2x 10GbE Side Zenarmor tends to perform much better than Suricata, but the two IDS/IPS platforms take different approaches to monitoring network traffic. I am testing with the native netmap driver, but I also tested the emulated netmap driver. The interesting thing is that the emulated mode seemed to perform just as well on both the 10G and 2.5G interfaces. Some work has been made to improve emulated performance recently so perhaps that is why the emulated mode seems to be working quite well compared to the native driver. Also you can see the WiFi antennas since the “U4” model comes equipped with WiFi 6/Bluetooth. The WiFi module only supports AP (access point) mode so you cannot use it for creating ad hoc networks. I discuss this more in the “Wireless” section below.

GoWin R86S OS Testing

Sometimes there are devices that are absolutely the best in their class. The R86S is the best in its class, albeit we are not entirely sure what that class is. In our review, we are going to take a look at how this small and low-power 2.5GbE/ 10GbE box is constructed, then hopefully start to delve into our best sense of its ultimate purpose. This little box exudes coolness. The R86S Hardware Overview The system comes pre-loaded with OpenWrt, but the company also lists Linux, Windows, Ubuntu, Proxmox, CentOS, and pfSense operating systems. Five SKUs are available with the G-Series adding SFP+ cages which are missing in the P-Series models: The overall performance is still not what we see from higher power parts, but one gets efficiency as the trade-off. Si recuerdas en la primera parte de esta revisión comentábamos que el tamaño de las letras del GRUB era tan pequeño que no pudimos utilizar el Aurga Viewer. Pues bien modificando el valor del GRUB_GFXMODE de 640×480 a 800×600 el tamaño de la letra se vuelve visible This is one of the most requested benchmarks for STH over the past few years. The task was simple: we have a standard configuration file, the Linux 4.4.2 kernel from kernel.org, and make the standard auto-generated configuration utilizing every thread in the system. We are expressing results in terms of compiles per hour to make the results easier to read: Intel Core I3 N305 Linux Kernel Compile Benchmark To monitor power consumption, I used an energy monitoring smart plug that is connected to Home Assistant. This allow me to see real-time power usage over time on a graph. I am not sure about accuracy of the energy monitory plug, but it should provide a good idea of general power consumption. The key and critical confirmation here is that the MCX4421A is currently utilizing a width of x4 lanes. This translates to a significant throughput of 3.938 GB/s, which is equivalent to 31.504 Gbps at the physical layer. However, it is crucial to note that we cannot fully utilize the complete data transfer rate offered by the 8x lanes default configuration of the card. A few months ago, we reviewed the original GoWin R86S. It was an incredible little machine with a very different premise. Instead of competing as the lowest-power Intel N5105/N6005 system, or being fanless, or settling for a few 2.5GbE ports, the original R86S offered 10GbE SFP+. Today, we have a new version of the R86S-N that was made especially for STH. Since it is a special model, we are going to call it the R86S Pro since it does not have a name, but if it did, that is what it should be called. This model has 25GbE SFP28, twice as much memory, and twice as many cores, and fixes our chief challenge with the original model. Let us get to it. GoWin R86S Pro Overview

Since we have seen the N305 many times, we just wanted to confirm that we are getting the expected performance. Python Linux 4.4.2 Kernel Compile Benchmark If you are booting off your USB drive, you will see the default OPNsense menu below. It only shows for a few seconds and you do not need to enter any options to proceed. This review took trying OpenWRT, pfSense, OPNsense, Ubuntu, Proxmox VE, Windows, and even VMware ESXi 8.0 so it was a relatively massive effort. Before we get to that, let us get to the hardware, starting with the outside of the chassis. R86S Mini PC External Hardware OverviewR86S G-Series only– 2x 10GbE SFP+ cages through an NVIDIA-Mellanox ConnectX-3 dual 10GbE OCP NIC 2.0 card If this seems a bit strange, remember that the N305 has competitive performance with something like an Intel Xeon E5-2670, so there is enough power to run well beyond 2.5GbE speeds. To determine the worst case performance with Suricata, I enabled all of the rulesets. In practice, you should only enable the rules that are applicable to your network to minimize the amount of rules that need to be processed. For instance, if you are not running a FTP server, you would not need the ET open/emerging-ftp ruleset. Suricata: 10G This is one of the most requested benchmarks for STH over the past few years. The R86S Revolution Low Power 2.5GbE and 10GbE Networking

The R86S mini PC is a compact computer designed for networking applications. For example you could use it as firewall, network-attached storage device or media server, or as a general-purpose computer. In terms of power consumption, this unit uses 10-11W at idle without ports plugged in. GoWin R86s Angle 2 Another change was moving from a standard HDMI port to a micro HDMI port. Likely this was done to save space for the extra USB port. Even though there appears to be plenty of room on the outside chassis, the layout on the motherboard probably would make it more difficult to squeeze more larger sized ports on it. Because of this change to a micro HDMI port, Gowin includes a micro HDMI to HDMI cable in case you do not have such a cable on hand like you might with a standard HDMI cable. I think it is great they included that cable because I would have had to go digging around my Raspberry Pi cables to find an HDMI adapter. Overall, this is about what we would expect from the system. Performance well beyond the Intel Atom C3758 and the Atom C5315 and closer to what we see on the TinyMiniMicro side around the 8th Gen Core i5 level of performance. 7-zip Compression Performance It's important to be aware that the GW-R86S-U* models come equipped with an OCP connector, which facilitates communication via PCIe 3.0 x4 with the CX341A card. These models have been specifically designed to be a seamless fit with the CX341A card. If you're looking to replace the CX341A card, the ideal option would be the CX4421A in the version MCX4421A-ACQN.

If you are a US user or prefer that keyboard layout, you may simply press “Enter”. Otherwise, you will need to select your preferred keyboard layout. To keep this installation guide more general, I am going to assume you are not going to use a LAGG. You may enter “N” or press “Enter” since “N” is the default value to skip configuring LAGGs. In the BIOS, you have to set it to boot off of the USB drive since it is not configured by default. Go to the “Boot” menu by pressing the “right arrow” key several times. You will see it is set to boot from the eMMC hard disk by default. Press “Enter” so you can select a different boot device. Here are the unit’s three main parts with the motherboard in the middle. GoWin R86s Internal Three Components It is important to note that the Intel Celeron N5105 processor is equipped with a maximum of 8 PCIe lanes. Let's investigate the distribution of the lanes around the devices. To do this, we will examine the system's topology using the lstopo command:
