About this deal

There’s even a Universal Search tool that can be set to trawl the Internet at large as well as just all of your local ‘on TV’ content. The UE55D8000 is Samsung’s flagship 2011 TV (last year’s C9000 flagships are continuing rather than being replaced), so it’s no surprise to find it brimming with features. The highlight of which – from this writer’s point of view, at least! – is its new ‘Smart TV’ functionality. Samsung’s Ambient Mode is now included as standard on the TU8000, with the feature expanding its horizons beyond the QLED range for the first time this year. It’s a feature that’s been adapted from the Art Mode initially launched on the Samsung Frame, and allows you to have a selection of arty pictures, patterns or your own snaps appear on screen when you’re not watching TV. There’s no Dolby Vision HDR support, as is normal with Samsung right up to its top-range models, including the world-beating Samsung Q950TS, and we can’t help feel but feel the TU8500 could really benefit from a little dynamic tone mapping guidance when watching some of the more eye-popping HDR shows on Netflix. This might have helped retain some sense of sparkle.

The Samsung TU8000 TV offers three audio settings to choose from in the main settings menu. It’ll come with Standard selected out of the box, but you can also choose the Adaptive or Amplified settings.Unlike last year’s C8000 model, the Samsung UE55D8000 comes supplied with a standard remote control with buttons that you can identify with your finger alone, rather than the flat, silver variant supplied last year. We approve of this change – although last year’s C8000 remote control looked impressive, having no physical buttons meant that in reality, it wasn’t as easy to use. “If it ain’t broke”… Connections

Naturally, there’s not much in the way of a broad soundstage. There’s very little movement of the audio as we watch the “massive space battle” at the beginning of chapter 3 but, again, it’s important to have realistic expectations at this budget. Save change for a cheap soundbar and you’ll have yourself an excellent budget home cinema combo. Verdict It works really well, even automatically adding the wi-fi details it digs out from your device so you don’t have to mess around with on-screen keyboards, which is always welcome. Inevitably, some of the apps offered by the 55D8000 are less than useful. Most of the games, for instance, will probably never get touched more than once. What we maintain might well get some regular use, though, are the various video services on offer. Services which we expect to see expanding sooner rather than later. This is one of our favorite parts of the review as the design is very important for a television and a beautiful television can also make your room beautiful. Let’s consider the advantages of the Samsung UE55TU8000 design. First, the frame is very thin and when you place the TV on your wall there is no gap between the wall and the TV. Second, there is only one an almost invisible connection cable. Even if you mount your TV on the wall, the room doesn’t get messy. We give 4.5/5 points for the Samsung UE55TU8000 review part of the design. Samsung UE55TU8000 Price

Samsung TU8000 TV review - TechRadar

Note: Our Samsung UE55D8000 review sample was calibrated using Calman Professional, the industry-leading video calibration software. For this reason, we chose to watch Blu-ray Disc material with [Game Mode] enabled. This cuts out the noise reduction, and delivers all of the original texture and detail of film images. The disadvantages here are that you lose access to the [10p White Balance] and [Motion Plus] features, and also that more visible motion judder is introduced. Even outside of [Game Mode], the Samsung UE55D8000 would show some small telecine judder with film content, but [Game Mode] has a little extra visible judder. You’d think that losing [Motion Plus] would make motion blur more apparent in [Game Mode], but in reality, this isn’t the case, for two reasons. Firstly, the NR system can cause a selective motion-blurring effect of its own (if the content you’re watching is grainy enough), and secondly, 24fps material generally doesn’t reveal the limitations of LCD motion, anyway. There’s no doubt that if you’re looking for a well-specified 4K UHD TV that won’t break the bank, the TU8500 is an enticing prospect. It’s more cutting-edge than you might first think (Samsung can’t help itself), and smart connectivity is excellent. In terms of usability, the Tizen platform is fast and intuitive. Attractions include Multiview, which enables you to co-display your smartphone screen, Ambient Mode, should you want to keep the set busy when not watching programmes by displaying artwork, and Samsung SmartThings smart home control compatibility. Your connected smart devices appear on the set’s dashboard. It’s also compatible with voice assistants, be they Alexa or Google Assistant. Samsung TU8500 review: Verdict The TVs sensor will detect the brightness of a room and adjust the picture accordingly, so it looks more like a picture than a TV that’s just been left on, which in turn saves power. You can set a timer too, to ensure it switches off after a period of time. That means a press of the home button will bring up a row of your installed apps, which are now smaller to fit more on screen, and highlighting any one of them will show up a secondary row of suggested content or actions. This content will be customised to your viewing habits if you’re signed in to that particular app, so Netflix will offer to continue what you were last watching, for example.

The 2 x 8W sound system offers enough power to bring use to the vast proportion of the 0-100 volume scale on the TV and it takes until well up into the 80s before the audio becomes noticeably distorted. Leave the sound mode set to Normal –there are no DTS or Dolby Atmos modes to worry about – and you’ll find a performance that’s both consistent and clear.Samsung has long offered one of the most comprehensive smart TV systems through its Tizen platform. It’s had some small design tweaks since last year, but navigation is pretty much identical and is still just as simple as before. There are some other issues that videophiles should keep in mind though: brightness uniformity is inconsistent across the screen (as is often the case with large-sized LCD TVs), and there is some mild motion judder to contend with when watching 24p film material. Lastly, we had to enable “Game Mode” to avoid the natural film grain of some Blu-ray Disc movies being removed by the UE55D8000?s video processing (which, again, we really do think Samsung should give the user full control over). Search Bar: This powerful feature lets users search for a specific title among all the content available to the Smart TV (e.g. YouTube videos, PVR hard disc drive storage, and connected DLNA devices), which can come in very handy if one is unsure about which icon/app to choose to enjoy a particular content. Motion is vexatious from any source though, each of the D8000’s settings establishing its own particular shortcoming even as it clears up that of the previous preset. And sound, unsurprisingly given the cabinet dimensions, is on the weedy side.
