It’s also bursting with humour; for a face that screams ‘nothing special’, Paul is an extremely witty character. In his time on the British stand-up circuit, he has firmly established himself as the white-haired Irishman whose name nobody can pronounce. Chairman Meow had dropped her most recent victim and then stretched out about six feet in front of him, like she was considering a mid-afternoon snooze.

The author is a funny man by trade, Irish comedian trying his hand at a novel in a most auspicious manner. He cursed himself for wasting the few minutes he’d had before having to flee his home on sorting through DVDs, rather than doing practical stuff like putting on some more clothes. Due to his generic facial characteristics, he manages to pretend to be whatever the feeble minded residents of an old people home think he is. In fact, at first you don't understand why it's funny, like it's not supposed to be a detective, then you just give yourself into the power of stupid, seemingly inappropriate fun. For all the comedy, I would not rate this new series so high if it wasn’t for the serious notes that somehow make their way into the text. I expected to like it, but still, there needs to be some kind of connection and luckily it was there. My own problem with crime fiction is that I am easily tempted: I am always on the look out for fresh material, and I often manage to find something to please me, which often leads me to ignore other interesting series I’ve already started.No more on the plot as that would royally ruin it but suffice to say it’ll keep you wondering to the end.
