We struggled to see the point of the close-up mode though, as the quality of one's close-up shots depends more on the use of the right kinds of accessory - such as a macro lens and possibly a ring flash - than any camera setting. In particular we appreciated the new touch-screen interface, faster burst mode, expanded ISO range and the ability to continuously auto-focus during movie recording, although the innovative Hybrid AF system still doesn't solve the camera's sluggish Live View auto-focusing, something that Sony's SLT range in particular has already overcome. One thing we dislike about its operation is that you can't retract the lens from an extended position without putting it on a powered-up camera, and the lens doesn't retract when the camera is turned off.

This is important for Canon, as competitors like Sony, Olympus and Pentax all offer image stabilisation in their DSLRs. In fact, the only minor niggle we have are that the on-screen controls are relatively small, which might make operation slightly hard work for anyone with sausage-like fingers.

All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 18 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb. These capable cameras should be solid and well-built, have both the speed and focus to capture fast action and offer professional-level image quality.For the time being it will sit alongside the 18-month-old 600D, though it’s likely it will eventually replace it completely. The EOS 650D uses Canon's DIGIC 5 processor (as seen in the S100 and G1 X compacts), which helps enable a boost in the sensitivity range to ISO 12,800 (25,600 extended), and allows lens-specific corrections for chromatic aberration and vignetting in the camera's JPEG processing. And for users that are far more familiar with composing via an LCD screen than a viewfinder, live view performance is of no small concern.
