Ooh, Craigellachie has gone and made a rather intriguing expression here – a single malt Scotch whisky finished in Bas-Armagnac casks! Craigellachie 19 Year Old was initially aged in a combination of cask types, with half of the vatting going into first-fill sherry casks and half going into first-fill bourbon casks. Finishing in former French Bas Armagnac barrels has softly rounded Craigellachie’s weighty style with warming notes of baked apples, dusted with heady cinnamon. The nose is bonkers; meatier than the 23, a carnivore’s dream, with alluring sulphur notes, exotic notes of pineapple juices, wafts of vanilla and dreamy buttermilk with tonnes of spices rounded with a multi-layered herbaceous character I could not help but spend a lot of time with. year-old single malt from Craigellachie, distilled in September 2012 and matured in a first fill oloroso sherry butt. Distilled in 2007, this whisky matured for 15 years in a sherry butt until it was bottled in 2022, with an outturn of 753 bottles at cask strength, and with no added colour. The distillery was built in 1891, when the great alfred barnard described our whisky as 'a style seldom met', and we've been old fashioned - in style and flavour - ever since.Just so you know, this is my wife’s favourite whisky of all time, so much so that the last time I had a bottle in I had to hide it in the tube of a Craigellachie 13 to stop her dramming a little too often on it! The distillery stands alone, perched high on the rock of Craigellachie ( from which it takes its name) overlooking the confluences of the Rivers Fiddich and Spey. The casks and subsequent maturations are based off-site and the new make spirit is transported from Craigellachie to Dewar's Glasgow warehousing facilities. Craigellachie Distillery is situated near the picturesque village of Aberlour, in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland. Edward pulled out in 1900 to concentrate on those other interests, leaving Craigellachie in White Horse’s ownership.

He also owned a local brickworks, built new villas in the growing village and, in 1896, constructed a large hotel. All of the “elements” of this whisky seem to be on show, but somehow they feel individual, rather than melded into a harmonised whole. Or rather, the oak becomes more prominent and I rather prefer the earlier cereal and fruit elements that get dialed back.
