About this deal

I am a big fan of Brian Bilston and really enjoyed his poetry collection You Took the Last Bus Home (2017). When Salt goes missing, Brian becomes the prime suspect, and the novel switches from bumbling romantic comedy into crime caper. This play, pieced together by John Lahr from Orton’s journal as well as from correspondence and interviews, has often been overshadowed by the diaries themselves and by Stephen Frears’ 1987 film Prick Up Your Ears, adapted by Alan Bennett from Lahr’s biography of the same name.

Sorcha Kennedy gives us a neighbour wholly unconcerned about Joe and Ken's lifestyle and fame - just preoccupied with the usual working class Londoner's worries. His ex-wife has taken up with a new man, he seems to constantly disappoint his long-suffering son, and at work he is drowning in a sea of spreadsheets and management jargon. In 2012 he recorded a special Freedom Pass episode with Terry Waite, [10] and in 2013 he and Martin Jarvis journeyed back to their childhood homes in Grey Shorts and Sandals.

Lahr’s script lacks this same shock-factor, merely dipping into Orton’s sex life with vague references to cruising public lavatories and holidays to Morocco where young boys were easy to come by. Because it’s primarily told in diary format, many of these characters make an appearance only to deliver one line, so too often the small stage of the Seven Dials Playhouse starts to feel cluttered with entrances and exits. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. Photograph: Alamy Diary of a Somebody focuses on Brian, a 45-year-old sad sack with a yen for custard creams. The witticisms came thick and fast, sometimes so many punchlines in a row that at times I felt rather, um, punched. I love Brian Bilston's poetry and have often pictured us (well, me and a shapeless figure I assume to be him) riding off into the sunset together. Worst of all Toby has announced that boutique artisan publishing house Shooting from the Hip will be publishing his first collection, titled This Bridge No Hands Shall Cleft, in the autumn. I absolutely loved this book and found myself chuckling for days at the penguin in the freezer, the man at number 29 and Toby Salt's poems.

Leonie worries over whether she’s putting in more of Joe’s ashes, than Kenneth’s, and Peggy dryly replies “it’s a gesture dear, not a recipe”.

But there are too many (“Do not go, lentil, into that good pie”, “Everybody Yurts”) that rely on predictable punning. The floor of Valentine Gigandet’s set is tiled with pink-and-yellow squares which visually underscore the tension between the cocksure Orton (George Kemp) and the saturnine, self-loathing Halliwell (Toby Osmond), who keeps adding to the monochrome collage that spreads like damp across the walls of their flat. The 2 stars are for the poems which were great although I'd read quite a few of them on Twitter already. Taken verbatim from Joe Orton's private and often explicit diaries, this raucous and poignant new production is directed by Nico Rao Pimparé (The Start of Nothing, 2020; Rainer, Arcola Theatre; Candy, King's Head Theatre). Orton remains a compelling central character, George Kemp capturing his chutzpah, his humour, his confidence that never grew to curdle into arrogance.

An eligible young marketing executive from a minor public school, Crisp moves freely – but with increasing discomfort – at many levels of society.Through the year, (the fictional) Brian documents his frustrating and pointless job, the rise of his poetry club nemesis Toby Salt, his relationship with his son Dylan (along with his terrible football team) and his would-be relationship with poetry club newbie Liz. Part tender love story, part murder mystery, part hilarious description of a wasted life, and interspersed with some of the funniest poems about the mundane and the profound, Diary of a Somebody is a stunningly original novel from Twitter sensation, Brian Bilston. I spent the book with an irritating feeling that I'd read something previously with a similar tone, but never identifed what it was. However, by the middle of the book the too-clever-by-half poems and incessant painting of Brian as a hapless Some mother's do 'ave 'em sad-sack began to pall. In this case the person hurt is not the hero clown (who is seems blissfully unaware of how dysfunctional he is).
