About this deal

In the last ten to fifteen years, meanwhile, the internet and mobile telecommunications technology have altered the texture of everyday experience beyond all recognition.

At once retro, futuristic, dreamy, melancholy, gothic, eerie, noir, otherworldly, psychedelic, lost. I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts, but, even now writing this I can see my Granny’s heartfelt fear and passion in telling that story, I would not set foot in that house for all of the tea in China. Vice magazine later described his writing on k-punk as "lucid and revelatory, taking literature, music and cinema we're familiar with and effortlessly disclosing its inner secrets". The unit’s output drew inspiration from the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as well as cybernetics, cyberpunk fiction and mysticism. In this collection of writings, the author argues that we are haunted by futures that failed to happen. The terrible culmination of rock’s death drive’: Ian Curtis of Joy Division performing in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 16 January 1980. However, by the end I was skimming most of the articles due to the fact I was not familiar with the musicians or shows, etc.In turn this reminds us of the "hantologie" of Derrida, anglicised by Mr Fisher under the name of "hauntology". G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn (1995) for a botched guide to Suffolk instead of what it is: a work of imagination. Subsequently, Fisher was a visiting fellow and a lecturer on Aural and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College, a commissioning editor at Zero Books, an editorial board member of Interference: A Journal of Audio Culture and Edinburgh University Press's Speculative Realism series, and an acting deputy editor at The Wire. The irony, given the breadth of Fisher’s appeal, is that alienation is clearly a mainstream condition. A huge, though not exhaustive, anthology of Fisher’s blog writings and other occasional essays – K-Punk (2018) – appeared posthumously.

To anybody paying attention over the past decade, and more especially anyone invested in the aesthetic and political afterlife of theory, the writings of Mark Fisher have felt essential if at times frustrating. If there is fretful life in that philosophical spectre yet, it must surely reside in Fisher’s later turn to the realities of contemporary depression: the vivifying potential of feeling belated and bullied, the whisper at your shoulder that what might have been may yet be the dream that saves you. The oddest thing was, well odd for an Irish wake, when I arrived at the house, there was no one there except family. in addition, in discussing artists as unlikely as Frank Sinatra, he also demonstrates an ability to engage with music from different generations.

The unique pleasure in reading Fisher is that, whereas other first-rate critics – think Geoff Dyer or Brian Dillon – will generally apply a refined critical-intellectual apparatus to commensurately rarefied subjects, Fisher’s fanatical loyalty is to pop culture in its instinctively avant-garde strains. Satiation is the point at which you must face the existential revelation that you didn't really want what you seemed so desparate to have, that your most urgent desires are only a filthy vitalist trick to keep the show on the road. Ghosts of My Life não consegue alcançar os mesmos níveis, sendo mais uma coletânea de resenhas curtas orientadas em torno de um conceito interessante mas pouco desenvolvido do que uma robusta exposição teórica de um dos conceitos mais importantes para entender a cultura, a temporalidade e a crise do capitalismo tardio.
