About this deal

Previous special releases of the 105 were aged 20 and 40 years old respectively; this 22 year old was apparently the oldest release they could put together at the time given the required cask strength of 60% ABV. One of the few Scotch makers never to use exotic woods for maturation, Glenfarclas retains its integrity. Syrupiness from fudge, toffee and light brown sugars with fruitiness from stewed red berries and a refreshing citrus note. I have enjoyed quite a few bottles of this in the past but when I looked at this one it seemed a lot paler in colour and in the glass it just didn't have the same huge sherried Christmas cake nose.

It can be more like adjusting the mix: turning down the bass and turning up the treble, or vice versa. In celebration of Glenfarclas 105's 50th birthday, the distillery in Speyside has released a limited edition variation of the robust, punchy expression made exclusively with whisky aged for at least 22 years! This Highland single malt was distilled in 1987 and the whisky maturing in a fourth-fill sherry butt. Like I mentioned above, it is suggested that the liquid in my bottling and recent releases of the 105 is aged for around 8 – 10 years. This addition to the Summer 2022 release of Glenfarclas's The Family Cask series is a spectacular Highland single malt that was distilled in 1996.

It was eventually re-named “105,” referring to its alcohol content in Imperial/British Proof(not the American proof you would see on bourbons/ryes/American Single malts which is normally double the ABV). There may be something in the batch notion as, for example, I believe Glenfarclas still fire their stills directly, which must result in some variation and I have definitely noticed differences between bottles. Judge each case by its merits, but it’s not in the interests of premium independent bottlers to risk their reputations by putting out low quality diluted drams.
