About this deal

The characters of Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring first appeared in supporting roles in Oseman's 2014 novel, Solitaire, which features Charlie's sister, Tori, as the protagonist.

I know that most of my reviews are generally spoiler-free but I’ve been in a rut recently with writing vague reviews to avoid spoilers, so I’ve made this one with spoilers. I like the fact that they had their time to shine and were able to find happiness out of a trip meant to entertain and teach the students.I didn’t even realise Nick had a brother until he was introduced and I didn’t expect him to be a huge d. Others who he may trust and respect but also have an unconsciously harmful habit of not being able to keep secrets. Yet, these feelings are heightened to exorbitant levels in Heartstopper, for Alice Oseman makes the most of her masterful handling of non-verbal stylistic devices. Two of Charlie’s friends who are obviously in love with each other but won’t admit it to either one and it’s so cute to watch!

The series was later adapted into the Netflix television series of the same name also written by Oseman and starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick and Charlie, respectively. By Alice Oseman, winner of the YA Book Prize, Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. The graphic novel became the top-selling children's book in the UK following the popularity of the Netflix series. A television adaptation of Heartstopper entered development after See-Saw Films acquired the rights in July 2019. Meanwhile Tao and Elle will face their feelings for each other, Tara and Darcy share more about their relationship origin story, and the teachers supervising the trip seem… rather close…?

I loved how we were able to get glimpses into their time together and have a little side love story to enjoy, especially with the bonus comic that goes along with this volume. Since then, not only has Oseman written two e-novellas about them—which, by the way, will be released in paperback form this year, matching the covers of the rest of her books—but she also started a comic about this gorgeous couple in 2016.

By now, it is certainly clear that everything Alice Oseman touches with her words and art style becomes a work of art. Her use of the shape and organisation of panels to express feelings without words, along with their dynamic organisation help in keeping the story going and rising emotional responses that words would have probably left unattended.Additionally, a Heartstopper-themed colouring book was published on 11 June 2020, followed by The Heartstopper Yearbook on 13 October 2022. I also find great enjoyment in reading about the experience of others around the world within their works of fiction. I’m glad he only appears in a small section of the comic or I would have a whole lot more to say about him and his douchiness. Kirkus Reviews said of Volume Two that it retained the "distinctive style" of illustrations present in the first volume and that its transitions between panels were "creative" and "add creative flair". Charlie, Nick and some of their other friends who can so obviously see the attraction between the two, plot to set them up, encouraging the two to have time alone.
