About this deal

i love that justin uses his puzzle piece to self-soothe throughout the book, but he has to give it up to save his friends. And all that is true, but I have to admit that I had a couple impediments in place while reading this book, and they were all directly linked to my not-a-kid-anymore social status. While there may be layers upon layers of twists imbedded within the plotline at no point do her words feel over written, the story always feels far too real and plausible. And the way in which the kids outsmart the bad guy works within the context of the story, though I was a bit sad to see so many loose threads.

and one the one the kids will start to disappear having to play a game of Hide and Seek with 'The Seeker'! and her books are even half as great as this one then sign me up every single time - she blew me away with this book! It’s up to Justin to think on his feet, help his friends, and find a way to beat the Seeker at its own game. Now, you will NEVER think of playing one of our most beloved outdoors; and sometimes even indoor games again in the same way, after reading this intense thriller! Some of my favorites are “Hide-and-seek quiet,” which shows a baby moose trying unsuccessfully to hide behind an office chair; “Lollipop quiet,” which shows a bear and a rabbit with bandages comforting themselves with lollipops; or “Top of the roller coaster quiet,” which shows an assortment of animals anticipating that fateful moment! This is very hard to put down, it’s very smart and keeps you guessing to the end, the characterisation is masterful although there are a bunch of them to get your head around. With the Americans approaching, Amelie takes on one last mission, to save a group of Jewish children barely younger than her, and once that’s done she will at last find out if her family are coming home. She didn't interpret the shelter above the slide as being on the slide itself and she wasn't able to find him without some help. The little girl she believes she killed all those years ago looked so much like Lily, her name was Lila.

While I understand the complaints regarding the large, sometimes confusing cast, the supernatural twist, and the heavy handed social message, I really enjoyed these aspects and it's probably why the story worked so well for me. Every kid's nightmare will be explored in this story, and many of them were ones I also had growing up. They must communicate and explore each other's nightmares and fears if they have any chance for survival. It was easy to care for Mack and Ava because of their tragic backgrounds which make them sharpen their survival skills. This is a fabulous example of how a picture book can effectively communicate words and actions while serving to initiate more discussion with the child regarding his own behavior and feelings. But there were so many red herrings, twists and turns that it was impossible to work out what had happened to Lily so I gave up and just immersed myself in this wonderfully involving book!
