About this deal
Once you've assembled the tinder and kindling, you'll need to make a decision as to how to build the fire. However, there is a fine line between what can be used as tinder and what can be used as kindling––sometimes certain material can be used for both purposes.
Instead, use smaller sticks when the fire is smaller, and as it gets bigger, you can put bigger sticks in it. Often we are asked “what size do people normally use” or “what’s the most common size” for kindling? Sometimes just having a change of mesh colour to differentiate the logs nets from the kindling bags. For the cheapest way to build a mix of products (briquettes, bird food, compost etc), start with a Quarter or Half Pallet of your favourite briquette and add all the extras you need through our Add-ons Page. If the fire goes out, sometimes you can restart it simply be shifting around the coals and throwing on some more kindling to catch fire to the existing hot logs on the campfire.Break - We strongly recommend you break these briquettes in half (or less for very small stoves) because they do expand whilst burning and you don't want them to overfill the fire. Light the center of the cardboard roll (exterior) and it'll catch fire and burn outwards, catching on the piled wood as it burns. If the top-down fire method is being used ( read more about the top-down fire method here) place the kindling on top of the logs. Simply place a few kindling sticks into your fire along with our kiln dried logs and light with our great range of firelighters.
Once the tinder is burning, you can slowly add the kindling, unless you've already arranged it in a style such as a lean-to or tip over the tinder (see below for links to building the fire). Our kindling is naturally dried and cut to ensure it has reached the ideal level of dryness to spark and grow a flame into a roaring fire. They will burn quicker than Hotmax or other cobs but will ignite a well-laid wood based fire easily and effectively. Hi, I’m James, I’ve been using traditional open fireplaces and wood burning stoves for many years, and I’ve also recently bought a bioethanol fireplace.Traditional Kindling sticks are made in Scotland from local, sustainably sourced kiln-dried softwoods. Purchasing kindling from a reputable company such as The Firewood Centre ensures that the kindling is free of paint or finishes that can impair and damage chimneys and wood stoves.
Arrange the kindling in a criss-cross formation so that the pieces of wood are spread out but still touching.
