About this deal

I began listening to Ryan Holiday and his "Daily Stoic" podcast, and eventually dove into Marcus Aurelius' Meditations on his recommendation. He disagreed with the dead philosophers he was in dialogue with, on occasion - so I suppose I'm continuing on in the tradition. To conclude, I leave you with my favourite quote from the book; "A little wisp of soul carrying a corpse". Nearly two thousand years after it was written, Meditations remains profoundly relevant for anyone seeking to lead a meaningful life. With an Introduction that outlines Marcus’s life and career, the essentials of Stoic doctrine, the style and construction of the Meditations, and the work’s ongoing influence, this edition makes it possible to fully rediscover the thoughts of one of the most enlightened and intelligent leaders of any era.

With the way the introduction was written, who knows what was lost to history and what the translator had the liberty of changing. Not surprisingly the same term that is found in the prologue of the Gospel of John "In the beginning was the Word (logos), and the Word was with God and the Word was God. However, it is very interesting how true philosophy has remained consistent throughout history: this is yet more proof that true philosophy is God- centred. In Gregory Hays’s new translation—the first in thirty-five years—Marcus’s thoughts speak with a new immediacy.

He ruled jointly with his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus, until 169, when he became sole emperor after Verus died.

I've only read this book once, but it's clear to me that new revelations are likely to be revealed with each subsequent reading. Of course there's more to Stoicism, but a constant theme throughout Meditations is the need to not push against the flow of life; to accept what "Nature" has done. I read that passage to Liz, and she said, "I get that he's a stoic - I think he's not - but he WANTS to be - so he gives himself all these reminders.Overall pretty decent with some pragmatic and practical nuggets that the reader can walk away with and try to apply to their day to day.

It was more of a custom self-help book, a place where Marcus would give advice to himself and articulate his arguments and worldview. The meditations are short snippets of advice and insights into the nature of reality and how humans can best navigate their way through life. One of the most interesting aspects of this philosophy was the recurring theme of the "logos" - the rational principle that governs the universe. No matter what happens, keep this in mind: It's the same old thing, from one end of the world to the other.
