About this deal

The cover certainly did it's job and drew my eyes to it, then encouraged me to read the blurb etc and finally choose to read the book.

The subjects are wide and varied and the laughs are there but underneath it all there is plenty to make you think.

This is obviously an autobiography taking us through her days at school, right up to the present day via various jobs, various friends, men, stand up tours and hotels. By 2006, she had left the past behind her and began a relationship with Gary Delaney, a fellow stand-up comedian. She attended Mortimer Comprehensive School, later to become Mortimer Community College, [5] and then worked as a civil servant at a job centre until the age of 29. When having her eyes tested just because her sister was and Sarah being the one that ended up having to wear the glasses. The cover features Sarah wearing a yellow/mustard cardigan with the buttons fastened wrong, and her blouse underneath the with collar half in, half out!

The 'part autobiography, part self-help book' shot straight to the top of the literary charts, becoming a Sunday Times Number One Bestseller. Here instead are Millican’s own seven signs, none to do with skincare and most mainlining her trademark brand of vulgarity and intimate body comedy. And after that, if you are moved to comment about it on social media, don't say ugly things about her appearance. In November of that year she also announced her new tour, Late Bloomer, which is expected to run for over 100 shows from September 2023 to October 2024. I have never been a fan of self-help books, but if they were all like this then I would be reading far more!

I have seen her live and watched many of her DVDs and wandered around YouTube listening to bits and pieces. Millican has appeared as a panellist on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week, You Have Been Watching, Would I Lie to You? I loved how Sarah's mum's example was "they had four hairs and a picture of Elizabeth Taylor" and Sarah's mum would say, "It's a pair of scissors I have got not a wand! She was featured in the Manchester edition of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, broadcast in June 2009.

It may be worth beginning with a warning that there is a lot of very frank and intimate talk about sex and bodily functions of all kinds, often using what the TV continuity people would warn us is Very Strong Language. In September 2014, Millican founded Standard Issue, an online magazine for women, which was followed up by a spinoff podcast in February 2016. Perfect, for some, may be the operative word: there’s no denying Millican can turn a joke, and does so as skilfully here as ever. It's sad to think about that I started this book the minute before the biggest reading slump in history, I think that's actually without exaggerating.A few parts were funny, but I highly suspect that had I instead watched her perform the same material or listened to her read it on audiobook that it would have been hilarious. Millican seems immune to that: this show offers precisely the combination of domestic, corporeal and sex comedy she’s always delivered on stage. Living in Switzerland, I had not heard of Sarah Millican until she came up in conversation among some English friends. Sarah Milligan begins this book by taking you through her school years, explaining who she was as well as who she really wanted to be using witty, sometimes ironic tales.

On 11 December 2009, she appeared on Live at the Apollo and also headlined Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. I almost wish I'd got an audio copy, this could only have been improved by having the author reading it to me in her 'comfy' South Shields brogue. Particularly in the second half, where that signs-of-ageing routine tees up her most concentrated sequence of carnal humour. I couldn't resist the audiobook and do not regret it, Sarah's no holds barred account of her life was all the better told in her own voice. Whereas I would look and think, If he’s doing that gig, he’s about the same level as me, maybe I should approach that promoter.First Sentence: I’m guessing you’ve bought my book because you know the basics about me (glasses, cake, potty mouth) and would like to know more. Some problems are scripted, the roles being played by guest actors, while others come from real people in the audience, to allow Sarah to improvise.
